Cool, good to get out and explore the many islands! Susie and I are probably going to Palawan as our primary destination outside Manila but I'll be checking in to see your pics from this fall. Your camera work is always inspiring.

Hi again Toddy and sounds like quite a trip you have planned there ... I'm a little busy this month but if you stop over in Cebu, let me know and we can have a drink maybe ...

What about that jump to Masbate ... Can you catch a roro or pump boat over from Biri Island area or do you have to go over to Samar to get a roro to Masbate? The only time I was there, I came across through Samar ... The long way for sure ...

There is Roros leave Hagnaya and Bogo for Cawayan and Cataingan on Masbate at midnight every night. We have done the trip to Cawayan , van to Masbate City, pump boat Ticao Island , pump boat Bulan on Luzon. Next week we are taking Bogo- Cataingan Roro then hopefully a pump boat to Calbayog on Samar . To get to Biri Island there is a big pump boat that goes to Matnog on Luzon most days and returns to Biri in afternoon or you go to Lavezares and get pump boat for 50p . I have been doing my visa renewals at Tacloban so havnot been to Cebu since I arrived . Will have to catch up for a beer .

We are living in Sta Fe just aroung corner from bike hire Bar we went to . Right on beach . The pic is out front of house . Not looking forward to going back home in Oct

You may want to check the dates a different so for the CDO/Dumaguete roro.
Another option is to ride to Dapitan and get the ferry to Dumaguete there.

What route are you planning from GenSan to CDO?

I'm in CDO, travel to Malaybalay and Dipolog and other places around Mindanao on occasion.

Will you stick to the highways or take some of the less developed routes?

What route are you planning from GenSan to CDO? got no plans yet, but idea only... from gensan go back to davao, bukidnon then cdo, is there a faster ruote?

Note there is only one ferry a week between CDO and Dumaguete: http://schedule.ph/boat/from/Cagayan...o/to/Dumaguete

Dapitan is a very pleasant little town, several decent lodging options available, as well as a few upmarket resorts. IMHO as safe as any other town in Mindanao.
Well worth stopping at the Rizal museum / house if you have the time and an interest in Filipino history and lifestyle.

There are several Dapitan / Dumaguete ferry options, but confirm before you arrive, as I heard that the schedule I found on the net is out of date. I was told that the fast ferries have closed, so you will have to take the 4-hour option.

Assuming that you take the easier, faster and likely safer route to Dapitan through Ozamiz, the ferry from Mukas across to Ozamiz will cut a lot of time and miles off the route.

The Davao / Valencia / Malaybalay / CDO route is probably the safest. Going west from GenSan is generally not recommended for foreigners.

There is a bypass from Maramag (south of Valencia) that goes through Talakag straight into CDO, but some have told me that the Maramag / Talakag section can suffer the occasional bandit problem. The Talakag road running north is very nice and twisty with little traffic and good pavement.

Surigao to Davao: safest, quickest and easiest route is probably via Butuan on the highway.

If you have an extra hour or two, there is a stunning ride along the coast west of Surigao and west of the main highway. At the end, it crosses the coastal mountain range and comes in on the western shore of Lake Mainit.
Great sea, lake and mountain views, and a few challenges such as minimally maintained dirt road, temporary bridges and river crossings. We did it two up on a YBR125G with luggage after some heavy rain, so you should be fine.

Riding through the hills and reserve (biggest wetland in the Philippines) south of Butuan is also fun, great sweepers and good pavement.

The east coast south of Surigao down to Bislig and maybe through Compostela is probably more of an adventure than the Butuan route, but I've had a few locals warn me about some insurgency issues.
I plan to do that route by the end of the year.

Dumaguete / Bacolod / Boracay: there was a discussion earlier in this thread about this, see http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...php?p=21605473 and others.

Another off the wall suggestion: Siquijor. One of my favorite islands in the Philippines. You can get a ferry from Iligan or Plaridel a few times a week, and then there are several daily ferries to Dumaguete, one of which is a roro, but some of the others will take bikes as well.

Good to see that this thread is busy! Sorry as I have been busy myself too.

Had a chance to catch up with my ADV inmate Panglao (Tim Evans) who hand carried some of my bike parts. He was in Manila for a few days and we hooked up and had a few cold ones at Trellis Makati last Weds, July 17th.

Thanks Tim! Looking forward to the house blessing in Matabungkay soon!

The concrete road south of Allen is breaking up badly so be very carefull . Pot holes will bend or destroy your front rim if your not paying attention. Worst section is about 20km each side of San Isidro . The road is a lot better south of Calbayog . Only thing that concerns me a little is if u strike heavy rain you could be delayed but if that happened you can change plans. Ride safe , what will you be riding ?? I might be southern Leyte or Surigao early Sept .

Bogo , Cebu to Cataingan , Masbate

My girlfriend wanted to go home to Biri Island Northern Samar for the Piro Del Pilar Fiesta so I said I better go to and we will go there the hard way again. If every thing had gone to plan it would have taken 1 day but sometimes in the Phills things don't go to plan . Well it took two and a half days. We set sail from Bogo at midnight on the Roro to Cataingan , plenty of beds but they had bugs so by morning we had little bites all over us . The plan was to catch a pump boat to Calbayog , Samar but it wasn't going till the next day so we stayed at Cataingan a night .

Plenty of cute ladys and bikers in this town .

Didn't get much sleep there as we had 3 brownouts that night , then room got hot , gen set was started and woke us up again . At 6am I was awake so went walking around the streets . I was invited into the ULC Church for coffee and met some lovely people.

Chooks even lay red eggs here

Best kept real estate in town was the beautiful church

The goats and bull grazing in the cemetery were well fed , the mechanic repairing the tricycle had a selection of well used parts , not sure what the sign saying 63 meters Donors was for .

I really enjoyed my stay in Cataingan , lovely friendly people .

Wicked Cataingan, Masbate to Biri Island ,Northern Samar

The good ship came complete with kitchen , CR and all the comforts of home . The CR had no roof and boards you wewed or pooed between and a bucket to wash the place clean . The cargo was 2 x black pigs that made a lot of noise getting loaded and 7 fighting cocks

The Mitsy Diesel was rope started and the crew wanted it photographed . It took 5 attempts then fired into life . As soon as we cleared the Peir the crew opened the Casino . As we approached Calbayod there was a big thunder storm and it was raining about as heavy as it duz here. We had about 50 wet kids all wanting to help us for a few Pesos . The pigs were thrown over the side to swim to shore. Because of the rain we decided to take multi cab to Calbayog rather than standing on side of road under umbrella . It boiled and took us 90 mins to get there the 45 mins to get back to where we started in Grand Tours Van. By the time we got to Lavazares we had missed last boat Biri.
