Misfiring beast

My 1980 haas a CDI ignition, no points and a set timing that you cannot addjust.
Petcock and fuel ok. Started ohming and this is what I found:

Engine Cold:
Pulser Coil
High speed winding 16 ohms measured, Range 17.6-14.4 OK
Low speed winding 97 ohms measured, Range 100.1-81.9 OK

Charging Coil
High speed winding 420 ohms measured, Range 429-351 OK
Low speed winding 378 ohms measured, Range 419-342 OK

Ignition coil checked ok.

So I fired her up and proceeded to run her hard. Ran great for the first 4miles and then started sputtering, brought her home and re-ohmed her.
Results:

Engine Hot:
Pulser Coil
High speed winding 4 ohms measured, Range 17.6-14.4 Bad
Low speed winding 109 ohms measured, Range 100.1-81.9 Bad

Charging Coil
High speed winding 493 ohms measured, Range 429-351 Bad
Low speed winding 480 ohms measured, Range 419-342 Bad

Ignition coil checked ok.

Looks like I need a new stator (source coil).

Sound right? Any ideas?

Howzit Don

You on the money there, You don't need to replace them .Find some one to rewind them for you. That is a common probelem on the yamaha YFM quads. The motors run hot and the source coils run in the oil and get baked. One way you can tell for sure is to ride it and when its starts cutting check the colour of your spark [if it is orange then you know]

Good luck
cheers

2 TT600's

These don't exactly fit here, but oh well. I picked up two TT600's a couple weeks ago for $600 total. They'll be my winter project. The plan is to make one good runner and part out the other. We'll see how it goes. I'm keeping a thread of the project here.

Cry Misfiring Beast

Sent Stator and pulser coil off to Custom Rewind today, have new ignition coil on order along with new pulser coil. Once all those are in gotta rule out ignition. Keeping my fingers crossed. While I got it all tore appart gonna check all the wires. This puppy WILL run again no matter what the cost.

Eek My latest SR500E find

9500 miles and pampered factory service (service logs in owner's manual) for the first 10 years of life in the dry Texas climate. Stored for 20 years in a heated basement.

I drove it 500 miles and put it back in climate controlled storage for the Winter. I plan to drive it very little, just enough to keep it fresh for the foreseeable future.

These are my daily riders:

Excess 11 "Midnight Special" too big, too heavy, and too fast.

Hello, does anyone know if there is a company out there making reproduction side covers for the XT 500? Mine is a 78 model. I have checked the internet and no luck as of yet. I just bought the bike and I am in the process of getting it running. I will post some pics soon. Love these bikes! ( I have the right cover but need the left). Great thread too!

Hi Steve

Check www.kedo.de. Change 'sprache' to English. They have alle XT500 plastic in replica, also a lot of other stuff..fenders, decals etc

Good luck

Here is my new hotness!

The bike is a 78 with 14,000 on the clock. I'm in the process of changing all the fluids, setting the points, adjusting valves and checking the brakes. I have a side cover on the way from thumperstuff. I'm thrilled to have another one of these XT's in the garage again. This site has been a great source of information.

Well I would have thought so myself but the title says 78. It is a D model which I would have thought was 79. I have seen others painted in this scheme as well that were described as a 78. Feel free to way in. Just to let you know, I got the beast to life in 2 kicks. Now when warm it starts when I walk past it! I have a few spots of oil leaking just a bit. I feel the more I ride it the better it is for the bike. Maybe when the cold sets in I will tidy up a few things.
