YZ/WR Thread

Maybe this has been done before, but I could not find one.

I have just finished installing a GPS with hardwire kit on my '01 YZ426. The bike has a Electrex USA Dakar kit with WR stator and flywheel, WR muffler (ride in Michigan a lot 94 dB). When installing the GPS I also added two more batteries in the air box for more capacity. Here are some pictures

The 426 has more performance than most mortal humans can use and seems to be a bit more robust than the 450 so I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to get a new one:) I like the idea of setting up the bike for your purposes. I have a dual sported CR250R that is setup sorta similarly.

I got the batteries form http://www.sicassracing.com/main.htm it is the small battery part number 23-050. It is the same one that mounts in the headlight on the Dakar kit. The batteries are $15 each.

To mount them I used releasable 7" (longest I could find) zip ties from Home Depot. I removed the side covers that are riveted to the air box and drilled slotted holes so the the zip ties tight to install. I had to link the zip ties together to wrap around the battery. I installed the side covers before taking a picture. Hope this helps

My son just found a phenomenal deal on CL for a 2001 YZ426 and he plans convert it to a enduro.

The first step was to completely tear it down and go through everything. The bike, as purchased, runs awesome.....has great compression....and is screaming fast. But, we just didn't know the condition of all the bearings, etc.... And he wants to repaint the frame, etc.....

We will keep posting on this thread to show progress.




And the work begins.....





Oooops.....the linkage and shock bearings are shot. That will cost $100....but great that we tore into it to know to repair.

Just for a start replace the cam chain. Wear out fast!! Good Luck!

no strong spark

These yz"s dont have a strong spark so if you put one of the capaciter style lighting systems on they tend to kill the spark. Buy a wr fly wheel, stator, regulator and cdi to give her proper lights or buy on of the aftermarket power replcement systems and you will improve the spark and get a good lighting system beware because it will be an ac total loss system not straight dc.system. Be very careful removing the fly wheel because the thread on the end of the crank is a bit fragile (later models were beefed up to stop the threads on the end of the cranks getting destroyed)

THE SINGLE BEST MOD IS THE CAM 03 CAM OR A HOT CAMS STAGE 3 GIVES A SMOOTH POWER DELIVERY. THE AUTO DECOMP MAKES IT EASY TO START AND HELPS WITH STALLING WHEN BRAKE SLIDING INTO CORNERS.

GYTR make a quite cap for these bikes and they actually make a little more power down low and are a bit quieter but are getting hard to find.

The combo of the decomp and either a fly wheel weight (zip ty make a good one) or wr lighting system make the best power delivery. (zip ty make a 16 oz weight but is not listed maybe call them)

The next option is to go for a VORTEX cdi but these are a bit expensive but worth every penny. I got mine because I ride with the guy who make them every now and then.

adding lights on yz400f?

I have a 99 YZ400f, absolutely love this bike. I am adding a baja designs external stator system I bought on ebay along with a baja designs voltage regulator. WTB- special shifter for this kit, I need one. There is install information online but I am wondering if any inmates have used this system and can give me any tips. Parts are for my specific bike so thats a plus.

Down to the guts!

Well another day discovering more things to to and more parts to buy!
as said earlier i pulled some bearings out of the shock linkage and it was
rusted out and really needed some attention. So i did some research and
found this kit on ebay

for only $74 im all over this. ordered the parts today.

checked the front stem bearing and also the front wheel bearings. they are in
great shape, but i cleaned and re-greased the front wheel bearings.






i continued to remove everything from the frame and successfully pulled the engine
it was slightly difficult to get the engine out but we found that a good twist of the
head down to the ground worked well.



i pulled off the valve cover which was extremely easy (two bolts) and checked the valves.









next is to clean and degrease the frame and prep for paint!!! anyone got any ideas for some
cool color schemes for the bike???

The WR Flywheel and Stator are great. I have been running one on my bike for like 7 years. You also get the added benefit of the heavier flywheel of the WR for trail riding too.

I also added a WR 5th gear this winter for better road worthiness.

just ordered the new radiators for the bike, i picked up some oversized ones 30% capacity more for a
pretty good deal, but here is the damage from the last rider, and it looks like he tried to repair
it with some epoxy or something. so i just decided to replace both of em and go ahead and upgrade
while in the process.

If you ordered the Fluidyne radiators for it the cross over hose, from left to right radiator, is a smaller diameter than the stock. The YZ450 hose will fit, which means you can get the cool colored hose kit for it.

Also, like yamahaman said while you are have the engine out you might as well replace the cam chain and tensioner. I had mine skip a tooth and the I had to puch the bike out of the woods about 2 miles of sand whoops to the road.
