I'll offer a slightly different view. After 3 Suzuki's I bought my first BMW in 2011, a 1200RT. I do have the dealer perform each of the services every 6k (which I do find excessive) but have never had one issue with the bike. Yes, it does burn oil so I've traded lubing and cleaning a chain every 500 miles to adding a bit of oil. Now I've not drunken the BMW cool aid and find many issues with the brand but the RT fits me perfectly and has been trouble free for the last 2 1/5 years.

I never had more than annoying problems with the 4 BMWs I've owned.
  • The R1100R lost the hall effect sensor and stranded me, it was 10 years old when it happened, I learned that's about the lifespan of the connector cable.
  • The F650 Strada had a water pump leak and a mysterious engine rattle. Sold it before these turned any worse.
  • The K1200R went through 3 fuel sensor strips and developed an output shaft leak over a 15,000 mile period. It also developed 3 broken ribs, a broken hand, and some deep contusions and scrapes in the control module during the very last 150 feet.
  • The R1200GS went though a fuel sensor strip and... well that was it over a 22,000 mile period. No real complaint. The sensor strip things is aggravating not so much for the lack of a fuel gauge but because of the trouble light it turns on.

When I sold the R1200GS I went with a Honda ST1300. 20,000 miles into it no problems yet, but I won't say more. Don't want to jinx it. I don't have anything to really say bad about Beemers, may even own one again someday. But I don't really miss anything about them either.

I bought a used 2004 R1150GSA in 2007 with 3K miles. In the next 22K miles it had a stick coil fail, starter fail, slave cylinder failed fucking the clutch as well. My dealer charged $700 to fix that which is about half price, I'm a good customer, or I used to be. I put 32K miles on two used F650s that were trouble free. My 3 used K75s racked up 21K miles without missing a beat. My new 1994 K11RS had a left side sump cover replaced under warranty and a leaking front brake reservoir replace under warranty, then gave me 25K trouble free miles. I put 10K on a new Rockster,no problems. I put 15K miles on a different used R1150GSA with no problems.

Just purchased a used 2007 FJRAE in Florida, will do a fly and ride for that one soon.

My new 2011 T800 Roadie has been perfect as well, doesn't really fit in this thread but thought I'd add it since Bueller has one, I think.
