CA 89 Monitor Pass opening date?

Does anyone know when CA SR89 Monitor Pass will re-open this year? It seems like a light snow year ... caltrans site shows it has opened between mid-March and April 29 the last 5 years or so. I would like to cross next weekend.

Thanks - dman

I live about 15 miles from the eastern end of Monitor Pass.

Hard to tell when it'll open. Last year it opened early because there wasn't much snow. This year is an average to above-average snow year so it will and is later. We haven't had much snow lately, but otoh we've had below-average temps this spring and a lot of small snowstorms in the mountains.

You can find up to date information on this website:

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/ by putting in the Hwy number.

Good luck! I hope it opens soon too, I'm itching for a ride. When it does open, watch out for sand in the corners!

Darn complicated forum here. Finally fixed now, and tested this time.

Good way to puff up my miserable post count though, yes?

Yup, rode up it from 395 just after noon on Saturday. I'm surprised it wasn't opened earlier since the snow isn't that deep and it doesn't look like it was blown for a while. Regardless, nice ride and it was nice having the shortcut.

Capt Ron,

If you decide to take that loop again and want to throw out an invite, i'm always up for the mountain rides in the spring.

The East end sure had a lot of tar snakes though

There was still a bit of dirt on the road yesterday from slides, but no traffic

still closed

I just checked and it's still closed. Sent an email to Caltrans asking when they expect to plow sonora pass and monitor pass and commit to keeping them open.... There is a snow advisory on 108 in Dardanelle and they are expecting up to 8" tonight and tomorrow, probably more on top. We may just have a month to wait....
