If I'm not mistaken those are security bolts. If indeed they need to be drilled and easy outed. Do a search for the lynx fairing from britanica composites and you will find some info about it.

I've got one on the way. So I'm assuming then there'll be some instructions with it when I get it?

I'm confused. Why not just use the proper tool to remove them?

There isnt a tool. When the factory installs the bolts the head shears off, like stripping a bolt on purpose.

Get a center punch, and pop it right in the middle, then drill it out with a bit just a little smaller than the head. They're pretty soft.

Well, if they are what I think they are, it's basically an Allen wrench with a hole drilled into the tip to accommodate the pin in the socket in the end of the bolt. Aka tamper-proof or security hex socket. There are also torx versions.

I used to take them out with a center punch. Place it on the side of the head, start hitting the punch as you move it down at an angle until you're applying force in the loosening direction while hitting it. Didn't have to get the drill out, but the drill is easier.

These are a different animal altogether. What you see in the picture is not the head of the bolt as fastened to the bike, as that part sheared off. The bolt extends past the "head" that you see to the actual drive head, with a weak spot where the bolt breaks off when a specified torque value is exerted on it - dig?

Yes, I know what those are too. From the OP's description it sounded like a removable security Allen bolt with dirt in it, not these permanent ones. Obviously it's not what I thought it was.

Thanks for the help all. The bike is all in pieces now, but I think tomorrow I should be able to get it buttoned up. I will have done all the air intake mods & removed the charcoal canister, new plastics, new gas tank, handlebars/guards/mirrors. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to get out and ride it soon :)

Alright, I think I've gone and done something stupid. I decided to cut down the whale tail a bit.. you know, so I'd be cool. Anyway, I managed to cut a wire bundle (yellow and a black wires) while I was sawing blindly away. The bundle is the one that comes out of the tail light, and then goes along the back of the tail light to the right side of the bike. As far as I can tell that bundle didn't go anywhere, but that doesn't make sense (certainly doesn't go anywhere now...). I've lost the brake light (normal tail light still works), bike still starts, blinkers still work, headlight doesn't turn on until after it's running (I can't remember if it was always like that). All the fuses seem OK. I guess it's possible that I lost the brake light awhile ago and just haven't noticed.

I might have to post pictures tomorrow, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction without them.

I couldn't turn around on the trail (and didn't want to) and had no way of getting past this tree while on a very very steep mountain side so I decided to go underneath the tree. ;)
