Your the #s guy I was waiting for, what is the theoretical top speed at the 10k RPM limiter? I've had the lil Ninja indicate over 90 MPH but in 5th, she didn't want any part of 6th gear.
IIRC Dirt Bike did a top speed test with a built XR650 of Johnny Cambells Baja race effort, full factory Honda race built bike and a Factory 525 EXC KTM, after pulling off fenders & schrouds and laying on the bikes in sheer clothing they only got around 108-109 mph, two bikes probably near double the crank HP of a WR250r. Is the 25 RWHP confirmed? |

Dynos are all different. I'd like to see Cycle World do a full test so we can get comparable weight and power numbers on this new guy. Meanwhile, here's one take:
Quote:
The WR250 is running less compression and has a lower redline. The exhaust is probably more restrictive. It might have altered cam timing as well. Even so, 25-30 hp is no stretch. Oh, and my calculations show 99 mph at 10,000 rpm in 6th gear.

OK, assuming it'll pull it that far, 99 MPH. I ride side by side with my own SMR450 Husky, wind limited at just over 100 and a KTM EXC250RFS that only pulls 74 MPH on flat pavement, somewhere between the 2 the true top speed must lie, I'm betting closer to the KTM than the 17" wheeled SMR450 with over 50 crank HP.

Cycle World tested the SMR450 in the April 2007 issue. It put out 48.3 hp at 8,500 rpm and top speed was measured at 106 mph.
In physics terms, 106 mph is an awful lot faster than the 95 mph people are claiming for the WR250R. Wind resistance increases with the square of the speed and all that. I see no reason to doubt that the WR250R will honestly exceed 90 mph.

106 is probably with a pro jockey under 4-6"in plastic saran wrap, LOL. 95 is a long way off from 106 but that GPS 74 mph on the 250 RFS is a far, far away number from 95 as well, no???

According to a Nov. 1989 road test in Cycle, the KLR250 would "pull the 9500 rpm redline in sixth (90 mph)." No mention of top speed in Cycle's May 1988 test of the NX250, but theirs topped 78 mph at the drag strip.

the bike should go 90+ according to the speedo , but it will be at least 6mph off. i tried to see what it would do today but couldn't because of ditch donkeys. i hit 80 on the speedo [74 gps] but had to back off because of the donkeys.

I'd place my bets on somewhere between 85 and 90 mph on GPS with minimal wind.
Also check the Jap and Euro websites for manufacture posted hp.. |

Any WRR owners out there coming off a KLR650 as a previous bike? I've had 'em all from KLR to DRZe to LC4E. My question for you KLR ownwers is - does the WRR pull through the gears with at least the gusto of a KLR? I'm about ready to buy one and this has been a reservation. It doesn't need to pull like the LC4 but I'd really like nothing more sluggish than the KLR. My sense is that it's probably got about the same pickup ... and that would be acceptable. Lil help?

The WRX pulls through the gears like a MX bike. I don't know why everybody is amped up about top speed. The bike is fast. The bike is powerful. It is geared nearly perfect. Yamaha did there homework and got it right. I see people cringing like there is supposed to be a XT250 hiding inside it somewhere. Fir cripes sakes it is a Yammy version of a KTM or Husky! Does it have to walk on water too?

I am enjoying watching this discussion on top speed. Thought I would try to get some input from WR250X owners to add in so I started a thread over at TT to get input.
This is the most interesting post so far ... that is he sees 105 mph on speedo, 95 mph paced by a car ... and has 4000 miles on already! "I drive my wrx 110 miles a day to work I have hit top of 105 on my speedo in MPH not KMH I also dropped one tooth in the front.....I can go faster now than I did stock. My stock top speed was 99 but now I can get to peak power with the smaller sprocket. I have been running with my friend in his sububan at that 105 I am running actual 95. This machine will rev so freakin high I think I am really pushing it as far as it will go. I change my oil once a week and hope that I don't run into problems. At the end of this week I'll have over 4000 miles on her." http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=641295

speed
Personally, I don't care about the top speed of any bike as long as it can cruise at 70 or so without feeling particularly stressed. Anything above that is superfluous to me, as there's no speed limit in the land higher than that. I don't mind getting passed by fast laners as long as I can keep up comfortably in the right lane.

My interest was from comments it would cruise easily at 80+, I'd certainally keep a 8100 RPM cruise to a short passing blast. It dosen't take much of a headwind, or side wind for that matter to keep my de-emmissioned +50 HP 450 from getting past 90 MPH, a 30 crank HP 250 getting there easily is certainally suspect.
Having a 80+ reserve is real nice, I'm guessin the real cruise speed is 65-70 at reasonable RPM/piston speed??? Time for more math,,, |
