Looks like its the oil pressure switch? (left side of engine behind the pushrods).

Yep new switch comes with a crush ring.

Install and torque to spec.

is this the same part as the "Duralast PS158" for "$7 bucks at auto zone" as per the "airhead parts - the dark secrets revealed" thread?

I've not used the exchange personally, The BMW one cost me all of 12.23 cents, so unless I were on the rd and it failed... I'd just pay the extra 5 for the bmw part.

all good advice

I just had the same problem on Barbie's bike.

Go with the cheapest unit; only thing to remember si to clean up everything well before installing and use the correct torque.

shouldn't be too much of a problem, just put a drip pan/cookie sheet down

there will be some drips, but it shouldn't be pressurized much.

Some guy changed one out in my parking lot and made a mess for me to clean up. For mine, I set it down on the right cylinder, and diden't lose a drop of oil.

+1

Yep, can't tell clearly, but it looks like it is leaking through the switch, so there is only one way to fix it.

+2 - they start leaking around the crimp and there aint nuthin you can do about it! Just replace it! I went to the foreign auto parts place and got one for a 2002 if I recall correctly. That was a lot closer than 30 miles to the dealer. Something like $7 or $8. Or you could go the the BMW car dealer and get one for about the same price, if you have one near you. Same little unit, but when it's for a motorcycle it's suddenly very special.

Yes. The swap will take you all of about 3 minutes to do. Spray the area down with some contact or brake cleaner, remove the old unit, reinstall the new one. Torque to spec. If you're worried about oil coming out of the hole, lean the RH rocker cover over on a milk crate.

You'll also need a 24mm socket for this job - crescent wrench, box or open end won't work.

A 15/16" will also sometimes do the trick.
