It looks like you need a hot knife. Maybe you could mount a V shaped exacto blade onto a soldering gun ?

Those look like serious hot carving tools. Are they sold as tire carvers, or for something else?

Hi there,
sorry that Mr. Peterhansel doesn´t qualify as a biker to me any more since tossing a bike-competitor into a swollen river during this year's Dakar with his as a Mini disguised BMW, not stopping, not looking back ... all his motorcycle-successes are outnumbered by this to me!!!

Groovers are pretty common in other forms of motorsports. The local dirt track stocker / sprint car guys use them frequently to tweak tires to track conditions. Some sand car paddle tires come with two different size paddles and are designed to have either the big ones or the smaller ones removed before use.

I'm really tempted to try grooving a 180/55/17 street tire to see how it works. Someday maybe.

Nice job on the TDM. I have a '92 that I use for some off road. I currently use Ortlieb panniers, but I am very interest in your panniers and mounting rack. Who is the manufacture? Thanks for nay info.

The rack is made by SW Motech and sold at Twisted Throttle. The boxes are Trax boxes sold to me by fellow ADVer LoFlow. It looks to be good to go but I give you the following caveats:

The rack installation instructions suck! Think Ikea w/o the pictures.
The setup is expensive! If I hadnt gotten a deal on the boxes it would have cost me a grand. The boxes are like 399$ each new (twisted throttle has some box returns for 300 each)
I am a little concened about how the quick disconnects will handle rough roads. Guess I need to do some research and get back to you.

At leasted Twisted throttle supports this bike. I emailed Happy trails about using their luggage on my bike and they just blew me off. Sucks having an orphan bike some days. Twisted Throttle did their best to answer my questions and always got back to me within one working day.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. I think I will stay with the Ortlieb panniers and add an Ortlieb dufflel. And the TDM just flat rocks, but after market stuff is hard to find.
