I'll soon be experimenting with a Pirelli MT21 ont he front of my new Adventure, but for the most part I have only run 606's and TKC80's on the front of the Adventure.
+1

908s are the toughest tires made.

Are you running stock rims on the new Adventure? Rimlocks?

As for the 908s, I have grown to like the front (3rd set), despite its flaws. Predictable tarmac behavior, decent offroad tractability and extended life make it my choice. It is also the only tire that can reliably get me back to camp without air.

The front tire looks like new(king as well).

Are you running stock rims? Ever been in mud with them?

yes stock rims, not much mud for me, I'm not sure how good they would be but a $120 michilin won't do any better!

Just my 2 pence.
have you tried the terraflex? or terrerflex as it's been called? at half the price of the 908rr I ordered one.
seems I can't get an opinion one way or the other on the 950-990. so I'll be a guinea pig

I know wrong thread/bike but the damned 990 has that stupid wide back rim and this looked like a better fit than shoving a to narrow tire on it.

I have not...I know a lot of the KLR crowd likes these tires, but I have looked one over and the compound was hard hard hard, so much so that it was chunking with any sort of wheelspin. I'm sure you know that a KLR takes some effort to spin the tire hard, an Adventure or SE does not. I guess I wrote them off as "just another tire" at that.

Part of the beauty of the Dunlops is that they wear as well as possible when spun hard, but hardly ever lose an entire knob or chunk at all. It seems to have the most to do with the quality of the actual rubber itself, not the carcass construction or tread design or anything.

oh shit. so it's just like a Kings tire. the 640 chunked every other knob
off of those POS Kings tires. worst tire ever... I guess I'll shred this one and get a 908rr ordered before I actually need it.
I still worry about that wide rim. maybe it's time to get a 950 rim.

908 Over rated

Tried a 908RR on my SE on the weekend, I found that the bike walked left to right for the best part of the first 1000km of dirt. After the tyre was 1/3 worn it became better.

Front or rear?

I've found nothing else to run in the rear of a 950 worth mentioning. Everything else either sucks, or doesn't last long, or both.

For the front, I think the 908RR is a great 450 tire, but I wouldn't run one on the SE. For D/S, a TKC80 gives good pavement handling and isn't terrible anywhere off road, and the 606 is unobjectionable on pavement and not bad off road.

We did back to back testing with a 606 and Michelin Desert in the front, much to our surprise we liked the 606 better everywhere, especially under braking.

I'm going to try an MT-21 on the front next time round... but given that I could take the rear off on a single in very few miles, I'll stick with 908's back there.

908rr

I had the 908RR on the rear. Even on the bitumen when we were getting to the dirt the tyre was walking. But like a I said once the tyre had a bit of wear it came good.

I want to try running a Bridgestone ED77 up front also for the all dirt runs and see how it does. It's also a very beastly tire with very stiff knobs.[/quote]

I am riding the TAT the first of June on my 990 adv. The ED77 is what i am running up front. I was hoping to hear from someone who has used one.

908RR is the finest tyre I have ever ridden with on the 950. We dont get it here in SAfrica, we have exceptionally limited choices available, so I have thoroughly tested the TKC, a Maxxis 6006, Karoo T(2), and.... Golden Boy!

That 908 I got to ride on Osteo's bike on a RallyConnex event in Canada - unfrigginbelievable. Wish we would get it here

Next best is the KarooT (2), then TKC, then Maxxis, then Golden Boy.

as a side note, Maxxis have decided to stop importing the 6006 into the country cos the 950 boys put em on, (they arent made for the LC8), rip it up and then come stick warranty claims in. Cheap tyre to fit, so they have cooked their goose locally. Idiots.

IMO, the Dunlop 908 in the rear and the TKC80 in the front is the way to go. I tried a bunch of other combos and they lasted like crap.
