Bike Swap

Larryboy and I had worked out a deal to swap bikes. He would ride his KLR 685 up from Sacramento http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...49825&page=232

And I would ride my Bandit 600 from Hood River and we'd meet near Grants Pass to do the trade.

I spent the week prior working on the bike. I had been using it for classes and had set it up for slow speed handling. This made it a handful at freeway speeds. To prepare for the long slog down I-5 I lowered the front end by slipping the fork tubes up in the triple trees and putting a lower profile tire on the front. I changed the alignment, adding toe in and a bunch more lean out.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329873

I was pleased with the test rides: the sweet spot moved up-handling was neutral above 50mph
Friday I left after work to head to the southern end of the state. It was beautiful day, the first hot day this year. No wind. Perfect day for a ride. I went to Dallas and spent the night with my friends, Rob and Sandy.

Saturday market

Saturday, bright and early I hopped on the Suzuki and headed down I-5. The plan was to meet at Wolf Creek Inn for lunch.

Tawm reccomended I stop at Rice Hill for ice cream, which was a good tip!

I found Larryboy waiting for me at the Wolf Creek exit...

We stopped at the Inn for lunch. Built in 1883 the Inn has hosted a number of celebrities over the years. Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks and Jack London have all stopped here. And now they can add Larryboy and the Red Menace to that illustrious roster.

After lunch we rode each others bikes around the park. Then we rode to my friends, Pete and Kerry, who live near Gold Hill. I unpacked the sidecar and we took the bikes out for a more extended test ride. When we returned we did the paperwork and officially traded bikes. I watched as Larryboy rode off on Yellow Suzi...

random shots from Pete and Kerry's

It was fun to finally get to see Pete and Kerry's place. They had four generations wandering around the place last weekend and I got the distinct impression it was business as usual at the Droesch Ranch

Jesse and Pete brought out the guns and I even got to do some plinking!

North without my training wheel

After breakfast I strapped a metric buttload of crap to the back of the KLR. Playing on sidecars for so long, I had allowed some of my solo bike skills to get a little rusty. The first to become glaringly apparent was the ability to pack light

When I left Pete's I went down to the crossroads to gas up. I almost dumped the bike leaving the pumps! I absent mindedly let it lean over after I put the sidestand up. With a full tank of gas and all my crap strapped on the back, it wanted to keep on going. I would be damned if I was gonna drop the thing in front of God and everybody less than five miles from starting. I grunted and forced it back on it's wheels and wobbled off

Out on the freeway the big single ate up the pavement at a steady 75mph. The lumpy knobs and my lack of practice felt a little insecure, but the bike handled just fine. I stopped once more for gas at Sutherland and didn't stop again until I got off the freeway at Jefferson

I angled NE by E over to Stayton where I stopped for lunch. After I ate I ran North, stoping in Sublimity for gas and going East to Silver Falls Park, where i rented a cabinfor the night

I got up early Monday morning and went for a short hike. I wanted to get on the road so I didn't do the entire 8 mile waterfalls trail loop, but South Falls was worth taking time to see...

Nice. I can't wait to see a two wheeled wheelie once the hack is installed.
No one can say you don't do a fantastic trip report.
