Southport Newfoundland Revisited

Jamie and I finally managed to escape the gravitational pull of the Avalon Peninsula today, and for the first time this year. Temperatures crept up as far as the low teens Celsius, but the winds were gusting high enough from the west to make highway riding more than a little unnerving at times, especially along the Isthmus of Avalon. With the sea visible on both sides of this narrow finger of land, you're pretty much at the mercy of the winds which funnel through this area, and that blow right off the cold North Atlantic Ocean.

The temperature dropped well into the single digits on the isthmus section of the highway. It's amazing how instantly the temperature changes, once you reach a certain point along the isthmus. It's just like someone threw a switch, and it's suddenly 6 or 7 degrees colder.

This was Jamie's first opportunity to stretch the legs of his beautiful new 2008 Suzuki Bandit 1250S. I'm thinkin' he may have noticed just a slight improvement in top-gear roll-on performance, over his KLR650, huh Jamie?

We headed out to ride routes 204 and 205, which run along the shoreline on either side of Southwest Arm, very near where the Avalon Peninsula connects with the rest of the Island of Newfoundland. The Communities of Southport and Little Heart's Ease are particularly beautiful little outports...

We left St. John's at 12:30 and arrived back home at 7:30. Total riding distance door to door, for me, was about 460 kms, or just shy of 300 miles.

Here's a half dozen photos from our coastal ride...

Best-looking V-Strom out there.

Wish I had an Avalon Peninsula to ride around.

He was all set to ride with us, but being a realtor, he was called away at the last moment. He wasn't happy.

He and I have a 1600 mile (2500 km) three day trip to Lanse Aux Meadows planned for July. There should be plenty of black Versys shots in that ride report.

We weren't that far from Eastport. That's a beautiful area, too.

I actually save more than half of my vacation time to go on my famous 'Jailbreak Rides'. The weather is so unpredictable here, that it's nice to be able to go to work in the morning, and then check-out mid-morning for a 500 to 1000 km dayride, if the weather suddenly looks really good for the rest of the day.

I post the words 'Jailbreak Ride Anyone?!' on the Ride The Rock forum, and usually at least one or two of the local lads won't be able to resist the invitation to join me as a wingman. I'm addicted to it, now. It's like the feeling you had when you skipped off school as a kid. You know you're not supposed to be doing it, which makes it twice as much fun.

Thanks, Klay...

I'm really happy with the way she looks now, even if she is all tarted up like a street-whore in lingerie......
