How about a 1987 yamaha xt 350 enduro for running around in the dirt.

I want a more powerful bike with decent suspension travel, for running around in the desert with my son. I currently ride my TW200 but it's suspension is set up for trail riding, not hammering thru sand washes.



A local has a '87 Yamaha XT350 for $1000 on craigslist. Is this a reliable, just put oil and gas in it and run it type of bike. I am 48 years old and not a motocross racer. I'd truck it to the desert to ride - I have a DR650 for the adventure riding stuff...

Let me know your thoughts.

It's a 40,000 miles or better engine from what I've heard. I did some research on them when one showed up for sale here. Kind of a weird dual carburetor setup and somewhat limited aftermarket, but yeah, it's a low maintenance bike that should suit your purpose. If the bike is in pristine condition that's a good price. If not, I'd look for something about a decade newer.

Thanks for the info - got any recomendations for something in the '90's? I'm looking to spend $1000-1200 - I realize local market conditions vary around the country.....

A Suzuki DR350S is a slightly more modern version of the same thing. You still get the six-speed, it's light for a 350, and the suspension is better than the XT350. Maybe other ADVriders can chime in with other suggestions.

I paid $900.00 for this 96 XT350 back in December unless the one you are looking at is primo it's overpriced.

I added the barkbusters and tires before I gave it to my wife for Christmas.

1000 is a little high for an 87, but only a little. I've never seen one that was in decent running condition for less than 800.
I assume they get parted out if they are worth less than that. Lots of parts on ebay.
They are very reliable. The only common issue is the intake boots. They eventually leak (after several years). $80 for a new pair.
As others said, Not much of an aftermarket , but if you're handy, you can make do.
Mine after the last rebuild.


I like mine, but if you're looking for primarily off road, I'd go for an XR or a DR350. The XT leans more towards the street than the these.
The suspension is pretty weak and there isn't much you can do with it.
I thrash mine pretty good offroad, and it can take it, but it's pretty rough on me too.
If you can't find one of those in you're budget range, go for the XT.

Front is a Black YZ aftermarket fender that you can get anywhere. the rest is plastic paint.

Xt 350 for dirt?

I see lots of Xt 350 riding in the dirt. Blackplastic makes look fast. You can upgrade the front forks with a rece tec fork kit. strongher springs too. Out back you can get a XT 600 shock there. Good Luck! BIG ED XT FAN!!!

What kind of plastic paint did you use? Does it hold up well as far as scratching and chipping?

Krylon Plastic paint. Prep is important. Use a fine grit sand paper to take the shine off. Use light coats.
It will scratch, but is pretty durable.
My boots rubbed it off after a while. Touch up is easy though.

FYI, The tank is automotive paint. Professionally painted and cleared. Gas will eat anything else. It doesn't cost much if you do the prep.

I could have had the plastics painted with bumper paint which has a ton of flex agent in it, but I knew they would take a beating and wanted something I could fix.
I would not try painting the front fender. It gets flexed too much.

Isn't the XT a slightly smaller, much older version of the DR?

IMO, pick up a used 2-stroke 250 for some cheap dirt jones.

An 87 is a potential minefield, not to mention extremely dated tech.

What I was referring to was automotive quality paint with flex agents added. It's what the bumper cover on your car is painted with. Best done by someone who knows their way around a paint gun.

There are some rattle can bumper paints out there, but I don't have any experience with those.
