This should be posted at the top of the 650 X Thread Index where it lists other sprockets that fit the bike.
Glad I saw this tonight. I was on drive systems site and had sprockets in the shopping cart ready to purchase. Sorry that happened to both of you but thanks for sharing your experiences

Yup, new drive shaft and sprocket. They have to split the case in order to get to the drive shaft. Cost me about $850 + tax to get it done at the dealer.

Theres a whole motor on e-bay in italy right now. Might be better off buying it than either paying BMW or being bikeless for an extended time

Who told you that? Can you see the rust or if the tubes are pitted? How deep are the pits, can they be polished out? They are talking about the lower tubes (sliders), correct?

Unless someone has done a conversion to WP or such, a lot of the stock parts (upper tubes, sliders) get reused in an upgrade. Give Evan Steel Performance in AZ a call. He did a couple Shiver conversions for me recently and I let him keep the extra parts. There should have been 4 fork tubes in those parts.

You can also have your fork tubes re-chromed.

Well, I managed to total my xchallenge Labor Day weekend.

It's kinda hard to see, but the through hole on the engine case busted as well. I thought about using the pay out from progressive to pick up another and then move over the sweet bits (renazco, ohlins, et al), but I think I'd like to try something new. Looks like its time to part her out.

I looked around a but on the net and I found a few other instances of this happening. Not as severe as mine, but bad enough to require replacing lower frames and such. Too bad as I really liked the bike.

Don't really know what happened. I hit the last water break of the day and when I came down I heard a nasty sound. Rode to a friend's house about 20 minutes away. When my side stand wouldn't deploy I knew something bad had happened.

We were hitting it pretty hard that day. Nothing that I haven't done before though. I wonder if it had a hairline or stress from previous rides and that final thump was just the proverbial straw.

That sucks. I always figured if I totaled my X I would buy it back and keep it with a salvage title since I still have no desire for anything else. But I could see that repair getting expensive. Any idea how much they would Progressive would charge you to get it back?

Sounds like you might need a lighter ride anyway! What bikes are you considering to replace it?

Marc,

the buyback is a good deal. I'm pretty sure that financially it will be worth it to buy back and part out (as much as parting it will be a PITA). The biggest issue is the busted motor mount. I'm sure an ingenious person would come up with a suitable fix, but I don't think I'm that person. I talked to a welder and he won't touch it.

I do like the Xc. It's been a good bike. A lot more fun on unpaved surfaces than the big GS was. But my wife and I have a 1 year old and I figure I won't be doing more than 3 day trips for the next couple of years. As such I've decided that I do in fact want something lighter. Until I totaled the Xc I was only on pace for about 6k miles this year. I see a higher maintenance, lighter bike in my future. I'm shopping for a Husaberg FE570 for now, but I'm hoping to ride a buddy's 525 this weekend as well.

Long term I'd like to get a plated play bike that I could tow behind a tourer. No money for two bikes now, so it's gotta be just one.

Going to post up in the Flea Market as well, but looking for the cleanest G 650 X out there for a project - if anyone has any leads or can help me out please PM me - I know there is one in the Market right now in Canada, but the last bike i brought back from there and tried to register here in Iowa was a nightmare. I'm looking forward to adding one into the fleet!
