Day 1 Part 1

We drove in from the Swinging Bridges ride in Missouri. This was the scene along the Colorado River as we approached Moab.

We got squared away at our cabin and got suited up. To warm up a little, we made a run out to the Chicken Corners. It is about a 30 mile ride one-way from town. It is listed as moderate in difficulty and is a scenic run overlooking the Colorado River.

Dave stops to check out some petroglyphs along the way.

I don't have my reading glasses, so I can't tell you what it says. Perhaps something about good off-road riding in the vicinity?

Don't miss any corners in the pass . . .

Critic trying out Cannon's DRZ.

We headed back to town to refit, and then headed out on the next series of much more difficult trails. Up next, Poison Spider, Golden Spike, and Gold Bar Rim.

Day 1 Part 2

Now that we were warmed up we made a run on three trails that are linked together. We did the Poison Spider, Golden Spike, and Gold Bar Rim. The route below runs about 30 miles one way. This route takes a bit longer to ride as there are a lot of steps and obstacles to deal with.

Heading out toward Potash to the trail head. Lots of climbers on these walls along the Colorado River.

Lots of steepness, loose rock, and steps.

Lots of steps of varying degrees of difficulty. The nice thing about our group was that everyone was pretty capable so we were able to ride along without much difficulty or delay. But, there were some tough sections that resulted in some get-offs or tipovers that required additional muscle to negotiate. I think we all took a few dives along this route. I know I took a wheel kick on some steps that resulted in a stall and in me sliding back down backwards (no brake traction) until I went over the last step on the bottom and crashed. I saw Dave with his bike upside down after he went down a steep step in the wrong spot (can't always see too well what the drops are like until you are there). Between us all, we had a few spills. No injuries and good fun though. Wear full gear.

This set of steps isn't too bad. Some get taller and steeper.

This shot looks down on the US Gov't's UMTRA project which involves cleaning up radioactive uranium mine tailings just outside of town. I wonder how much radioactive dust we were breathing when the wind was 30-40 mph from that direction.

Looking down on the City of Moab. The La Sal Mountains are in the background. We took a ride over there a couple of days later.

Some of these rocks roll or kick out as you climb.

Minor collision.

As usual, sometimes this stuff is steeper or more difficult than the pictures portray.

Day 1, Part 2 continued

Critic doing a down and up. Pretty steep.

The dip at the bottom.

Critic coming out. You really have to hit the throttle on the way down to make it up the other side. Lots of fun! (just don't screw up)

This is an obstacle that can be difficult for jeeps and bikes. The scale is not real clear - it is wider and deeper than it appears in the photo.

Tomorrow we ride the White Rim Trail (counter clockwise).
