I was there late last year for a couple of weeks...Hanoi, Hoi An then HCMC. Amazing place and fantastic people...and the food is magnificent and cheap. I laugh when I think of the number of people who asked "have you been taught how to cross the road?". It`s worth going to Vietnam for that experience alone. You have to pick an object in the distance and focus on it, then step onto the road to broadcast your intention to the oncoming traffic, and walk across the road in a steady pace while the scooters go around you without slowing or speeding up...and some of them come awfully close. And don`t think that by staying on the sidewalk you can avoid the traffic because they ride on that as well. There is an obvious pecking order to the traffic though. The bigger the vehicle, the higher up in the pecking order - everyone gets out of the way of trucks!

We didn't see the sky for the week that we were in Hanoi because of the smog, although we were told that it was only "haze" by our walking tour guide. He also told us that there were 2 million scooters in Hanoi which was no surprise. We`ve been to some pretty busy cities but Hanoi has been the only one so far that the air tasted like exhaust.

Thanks again Josh for the report and the great pictures. ( I also posted in your Easter tour thread.) FWIW, when I was there in 67-68 there was a biker group known by us as the Cowboys. Kind of the local Hells Angels. They were mostly young Viets who we suspected to be VC. I wonder if they're still around. BTW the 68 Tet in Saigon and surrounding areas was very colorful. Thanks again.

Your 2 reports are very nice Josh. I like the way you take your pics. Here in China, more and more cities are banning the motorcycles. So poor people have the choice between crowded buses or bicycles, rich ones get the ACed cars... I wish that VN won't follow this path.

Reunification Day

Reunification Day

Today is 30 April 2008, which is a public holiday for Reunification Day, which marks the fall of Saigon and the reunification of North Vietnam and South Vietnam in 1975.

It was a relatively quiet day in HCMC/Saigon as it was raining hard most of the day. I went out anyway and took some pics.

From District 3, I headed across the river to District 4. I've always liked District 4, it's very.... local style I guess you would call it.

District 4 gets very few western visitors so it is always fun going there as everybody waves at you

I started of by parking my bike next to a temple and walking down this street.

These pics were taked only about 3 hours ago, so this is still 30 April, Reunification Day.

Walking on a bit more, the street narrows. This is for motorbikes and bicycles only.... no room for cars.

On each side of this street there were small shops selling all sorts of stuff. The people were very friendly.

I'm quite reserved and actually I normally wouldn't ask somebody if I could take their photo, so all the following pics these people actually asked me to get their photo! That's how rare foreigners are in this district, not even a 30 mins ride from the middle of town that if you turn up with a big SLR camera, everybody wants their picture taken.

Dried fish and saussage vendor. Was getting a bit dark by this stage, sorry about the noise in the photo, I had to crank the ISO setting up to 11.
