Jeff is booked at the M6 too. In addition to those listed above that's all I know of who have already booked a room.

Today Jeff and I rode the first day's section. We did not go over Hurricane and down 33 to Taft. Awesome riding! Incredible scenery and this section I consider to be the less scenic. I'll post more about today's (actually yesterday's now) ride later.

This is going to be an absolutely amazing ride.

Laugh Elapsed Time

All right all you so-called hard-butts. We rode the first day of CEDRIC yesterday. Mileages are cummulative. Here's what I found out:

0 Hour: Deer Lodge: 0 Miles
1 Hour: Quatal Canyon: 47 Miles (Jeff lost a skid plate but no off-road??)
1:30 Hour: Quatal Canyon/Cerro Noroeste: 62 Miles
2:00 Hour: Hwy 33/Cerro Noroeste: 82 Miles, Gorgeous
2:10 Hour: Maricopa Shell, Cop asks how our ride is going with an implication that we might we exagerating the limits of the law, refuel
2:15 Hour: Maricopa Shell, Cop is harrassing 13 year old skateboarder trash, bad idea to get on the wrong side of the law at 13 years old or ever in Maricopa
2:50 Hour: Elkhorn Grade/166: 93 Miles
4:30 Hour: Crossover/Elkhorn RD intersection: 126 Miles (after Pipeline, Pansie Point (naked lady), Weaver Springs?, Crossover)
5:00 Hour: Elkhorn/Hurricane: 141 Miles
5:30 Hour: Soda Lakes RD/Hwy 58: 167 Miles (after riding over terrain that David's wife wouldn't appreciate (the "road" was on the GPS)) yes, you can cross Carrizo plains on a big bike in dry weather!! I won't say we travelled at speeds in excess of what could be expected on Hwy 33/58 but....
6:30 Hour: Pozo Saloon: 196 Miles, absolutely beautiful (Jeff lost a pannier when his bike went boom)
7:30 Hour: Arroyo Grande: 222 Miles, Hi Mountain RD is fantastic, creek crossings are less than hub high now .

From there it's just a hop and a skip to Jocko's and Motel 6. We got lucky and with no reservation on Saturday night enjoyed a couple of fantastic steaks at Jocko's.

Note: Hi Mountain RD is a highlight. Pozo Saloon was closed by the time we arrived, late start. We did not take a lunch break. Longest (only) fuel stop was in Maricopa about 30 minutes. Hwy 33 was awesome. Quatal Canyon was even better. Cerro Noroeste, pavement just does not get any better than this, anywhere. Maricopa, cops, just say no. Elkhorn Grade and Carizzo Plain, missed one turn and checked out an abaondoned silo, made the trip to pansie point again then turned around, other than that followed David's route. Did NOT go over Hurricane RD and back to Taft and then up 33 to 58. I think at a minimum this would add 1:30 minutes to the trip. At best 60 miles of additional pavement Jeff and I question if we really, really want to spend extra time backtracking to Taft from Carrizo Plains. As long as we leave early it's no prob but...

Doing this route at my speed, Half-fast took 7:30 minutes to get to Arroyo Grande from Ojai. Note, Jeff lost his skid plate (on pavement?) so we stopped to remove the last bolt. Jeff's bike also fell and went boom on Pozo RD, dislodging a saddle bag. He says it's because he was going too slow. Considering he only drank 1 bottle of Old Grandad, 1 case of Fat Tire and 1 six-pack of Alaskan Amber the night before I'm sure it was the bike's fault. It was only the second time I've ever been in front if him in dirt, you decide.. Realistically, considering group dynamics we're looking at a minimum of 10-12 hours to get to Jocko's from Ojai if we eat lunch at Pozo Saloon and we do not go over Hurricane and back to Taft. Add 1 1/2 hours if we do go to Taft.

I'm open to heading over Hurricane to Taft. However, doing so only adds a slight amount of "fire road" and the paved descent into a million bobbing donkeys (oil pump jacks), then the memorable ride up Hwy 58.

Jeff's standard GS had no problem making it from Maricopa to Arroyo Grande on one tank of fuel. We zig-zagged through Carrizo. At Hurricane/Elkhorn intersection we went into the Plains and hit the last portion of Soda Lakes RD (paved). I won't say we went fast but I can guarantee you that we went twice as fast as the legal speed on Hwy 33/58 and took a shortcut but it still took 7:30 just to get to Arroyo Grande. From there we still had to get to Jocko's, and we did. Then it's a hop and a skip to Broadway in Santa Maria and the Motel 6.

Reservations have been made at Deer Lodge (Hwy 33, Ojai) for Saturday 8:00 A.M. June 14 for hello's and breakfast and Sunday 6:30 P.M. June 15 for goodbyes. Reservations have also been made for Jocko's in Nipomo at 8:30 P.M on Saturday June 14.

Still have to alert Pozo Saloon, Pappy's and Cold Spring's Tavern of our imminent arrival.

I'll ride whatever anybody wants. When this ride was envisioned I thought a straight trip through Carrizo Plains would be the thing to do. Hurricane to Taft will add a lot of time. I'd rather drink a cold beer at Pozo Saloon than back-track to Taft and add pavement miles. Crossover is better than last time but still very slippy-slidey.

The first portion of Pozo RD had been graded making it much worse in my opinion, just ask No-Pannier-Jeff. It's currently smoother but pretty loose. Will probably be compacted before we get there.

Do we really want to got to Taft?? Hwy 58 is Great. 33 is not.

I walked Colson Canyon to laBrea creek again Saturday, and a couple of the corners about 4.5 miles up from Tepusquet are getting quite powdery, with the dust being around 6" deep. Hard base under it though, and the rest looks fine. Still water in LaBrea creek, and in several places in Colson. I followed a fresh mountain lion track for about a mile along the top of Colson Cyn road.

AJ, I assume you will be joining us on Sat morning then peel off later on after you're done beating up Dennis! Or wait for us by your parent's place and ride until you'll get bored with us?

And you can't use the "friend's wedding", it worked the first time but it won't on this one!
