Thumb CEDRIC warm-up ride

Just got in. 12 hours, 408 miles. Not much dirt though. Just out this morning and in this evening on Soda lake Road (traveling south through the Carrizo near dusk is my favorite ) and over Parkfield to Coalinga.

Met DarrenO and Brian in Cholame for the ride. We went over Parkfield to Coalinga, then over Los Gatos to King City and through Hunter-Ligget. Caught up with some fire crews hauling over Nacimiento/Fergusson. Our request to pass the convoy was denied.

Darren and Brian were last seen entering the Main Street Cafe in Cambria. I headed back to 41/LaPanza/58/Soda Lake.

Darren and I meet tomorrow morning at 6:30 AM at 33/166 in Cuyama Valley. See you FFs at breakfast.

If you can make it, hook up at the Pappy's just off 101 at Betteravia near the south end of Santa Maria at 8:00am Sunday for breakfast!

The Start

The motley crew assembles for breakfast.

This is the Deer Lodge. Where are all the Harleys??

The bikes are as random as the riders.

In general, the bikes were better looking than the riders.

We didn't do the real ride, thats why we are home posting photos instead of riding until dark. We just did the 33-58-101 loop back to Santa Barbara, 300 nice miles but no dirt. Considering how much faster the rest of the group was on the paved road we decided not to hold them up on the dirt where we would have even been slower.

It was nice to meet a few more of the Advrider tribe.

I think that I can identify most of the motley crew:
From L to R, going clockwise around the table:
Dave (Richard Cabesa), Mike (Treadless), Bob, Wally (WallyWhirled), Dave (ddennis 669), Darren, Joel (h8 Chains), Don, Jeff, Diane (Eyes Shut), Wayne (GSWayne), and Mario (californiaxrv).

Well yea, or no. Stupid is as stupid does. Won't blame the bike but I like it less now than I did yesterday.

Well.. we're glad you survived. I'll give Wally that kick in the slats at coffee this morning. That is, if they all get up out of bed before noon. We didin't get thrown out of Jocko's until about 11:30

Breakfast Sunday a

A couple of pix from breakfast at Pappy's in Santa Maria on Sunday am:

Jeff, h8chains, wallywhirled:

DarrenO and Windrat:

xcountry (John) rode down from Arroyo Grungy to join the chaos. The guys all had smiles this morning after a few hours sleep and a chance to let some of the Jocko's meal settle in a little. I think some of them were having a little trouble letting certain parts of that dinner settle more than others. Let's just say that Windrat wasn't saying NEARLY as much at breakfast as he was at dinner

Everyone pulled out of Santa Maria about 9:30 to lifting fog and the spirit of the day's coming adventure written all over their faces. It should turn out to be a great ride. From Santa Maria, they'll ride out Tepusquet Cyn to Hwy 166, then East to Cottonwood Cyn for about 50 miles of pavement. Then there's 50 miles of dirt from 166, going up to over 4000 ft. along Sierra Madre ridge and out Colson Canyon. Then back to the asphalt for another 45 miles over to Santa Ynez area for fuel. Then back to the dirt for 10 miles of Refugio Road to West Camino Cielo and out to 154 to either Cold Springs or Paradise for lunch, then over East Camino Cielo and back to reality somewhere behind Santa Barbara!

I hope those guys slow down enough to take some pictures.

A few from yesterday:
I rode up High Mountain Road to meet the CEDRIC FFs in Pozo.
Along the way, a couple of the houses in the Lopez Lake area I know they may have missed.

Lopez Lake itself

Damn sign.

....and High Mountain Road begins. Truly, I just don't see the big deal. This is nice.

So, the first half of it from the south, is reaonably well...okay at least somewhat maintained.

Recent gradings made it loose but survivable (for someone who has no real skill on a motorcycle like myself)
Then I came to this little gate aparatus.

The sign on the right, if you read it carefully, says that you are riding off the end of the earth...that is to say riding onto very crappy (IMHO) "road". Just past that cattle guard the road dropped of into a severe drainage canal that hasn't been worked on in more than two years. Nasty.
Between the call of the beer at Pozo and my own riding "skill" level, I never stopped again to take pics as I was too busy hanging on and marveling at the bike's ability to go over stuff I was unable to steer it around.
Welcome to the Pozo Saloon.

H8tChains met me out front and took me to this. Very nice.

Bob bought such a big beer he was actually sharing it with others.
A couple other familiar faces.

(Now if you look carefully, you can see now two of those giant beers on the table. Apparently, everyone was in a significant state of dehydration)
Mike mentioned he likes his new Suzuki less than he did is probably because there is now less of it to like.

...and somehow this happened.

I would like it less too.
And then it was time to leave. Beautiful down town Pozo.

Dave's bike (airhead) is a beauty but rather unique. He had to explain it to me but it's apparently been quite the project.

Mike made a run south the long (but paved) way home and I rode aong in support....and because I didn't think I would get lucky twice in a row on HMR. I may be a wus but I think I made the right choice. I'm still sore today.
Lone CEDRIC rider heading for the barn.

And suddenly, it's cold again.

Thanks for letting me be a (small) part of this amazing ride. The guys who are doing all the off-road bits are going to be knackered tonight but my hat is off to them. Friggin' maniacs. Looking forward to the rest of the pics.
Mike, I hope you are feeling better. Good to meet you FFs.
