This past weekend...

RA at the Biltmore...

It just doesn't seem real to me, brother.

Warren was a bigger than life individual. A big bear, full of joy and fun, up for any hairball idea that one could conjure up, yet savy and experienced enough to urge caution and exercise prudence when warranted, all with a twinkle in his eye and a smile for everyone. he will leave a huge hole in mine, and other's lives.

I first met Warren in November 2004 when he picked me up at the San Diego airport for the Team Hairball 2004 Baja 1000 race effort. Bonezjones had told me about this rider he had ridden with at the Big Dog who would ride anywhere, on anything, at anytime, and would do it in a big way. That was Warren. He patiently helped learn to ride in the desert. He taught me virtually everything I know about changing tires and repairing tubes in the desert, under the most adverse conditions and with little to work with. He exhibited some of the most extraordinary riding skills one evening while riding 50 miles out of the desert into Loretto on an essentially bare rear rim while providing the sole headlight for Bonezjones who was riding next to him. All at speed. In the middle of the night. Several hundred miles into a Baja 100 pre-run. The sight of Warren's XR rear sliding wildly from side to side while he stayed on the gas and "under control" will be forever indelibly etched in my memory.

I was pre-running with him when he crashed hard, at speed and broke his collarbone and shoulder. He rode 70+ miles through the desert, at an impressive pace to get to our pick up point. He never complained or gave any sign of doing anything except getting out of the desert.

He made it a point when possible, to go out of his way to visit a racetrack where I was road racing, or stop through Atlanta, or go for a ride in North Georgia whenever he was even remotely in the area. He was a king among men who would give you the shirt off his back, a hand up, would bust a knuckle for you, do whatever was needed whenever, and would always have that twinkle in his eye and that great smile.

On one visit to Atlanta, I showed him one of my "projects" - a 1971 Moto Guzzi Amabassador. I explained to him that was my idea of a real v-twin cruiser. He agreed. The next several times we spoke, he happened to ask how I was coming along on the Guzzi project. I was stalled, having gotten the bike running well enough, but not devoting any time to the cosmetics. He continued to express an interest. Finally, I asked if he wanted it. Ever the courtious one, he responded that perhaps, but only if I really wanted to part with it. We met at the Barber Motorsports Museum, and he left with the Guzzi while I returned to Atlanta with some cash and most importantly - a special care package from he and Carol a small cooler filled with a cajun stuffed duck, some andoille, some boudin and other cajun fixins - some lagnaippe from wonderful special people. That is just the way Warren and carol are: always taking that little extra step to look after you. Six months later I saw Warren and the Guzzi at the AHRMA meeeting at Barber. It was not the same bike. He had given "the old girl" his special touch and attention and she sparkled. And she ran better than ever. He had a touch and it shows in that Guzzi.

I'm traveling and I don't have access to pictures, but I promise to post some upon return home. Mama Dulce - Carol - our hearts go out to you. Warren was a great friend, and wonderful riding companion, and I'm certain, a wonderful husband. We loved him, and he will be sorely missed. I cannot find the words to properly and fully express the emptiness Warren's passing has created. I am still shocked, and I continue to struggle with the how and the why and what it means.

Godspeed Papa Dulce. I miss you.

Sounds like many have been blessed by his presence. I'm so sorry you'll miss him, and sorry I didn't get to meet him.

Rest in peace, Warren. Godspeed.

This is terribly sad.

Would that we all had friends so close, loved ones so caring, fellow riders so generous.

My condolences.
