it may be a setting I chose note sure
but the arrows above the pictures on either side of the caption are no longer there ![]() I really liked that feature for scrolling through a gallery. Quick question. Is it something I changed in my settings or is a change to the site? Update - if I log out I see the arrows but when I log back in they are no longer there. Thanks Rich

Did you change the style? It should be a dropdown menu towards the upper right. If that does not work, post a screen shot so we can see what you see.

I should have thought of that here is a shot of the screen when I am looged in:(no arrows above the photo) logged out: (white arrows and a picture count above the photo) Other than the login the style, elegant and other settings appear to be the same. ![]() Thanks for the help Rich

When I am logged in it looks the same as yours, no arrows, just the buttons. I guess that is how it shows up so you can access features others cannot.

Hi rlovingjr,
Yes, that's actually a feature, not a bug. We take advantage of the space occupied by the arrows to give you buttons for editing when you're logged in instead. The thought was you probably aren't in major viewing mode when you're logged in — you're more interested in editing — and buttons + arrows = more stuff on the page and it would push the photos down off the bottom. Did we mess up?

Was this changed or has it always had that feature? An easy work around for me is to log out to get the arrows. With cookies especially I tend to always be logged in for better or worse. thanks again, Rich

Yeah, it's always been that way.
The two things our users are allergic to most are clicks and scrolling. The Elegant style was exceptionally tough to design because you have 1024x768 pixels to fit it in before the dreaded scrolling beginneth... (800x600 for Elegant small.) So whenever we face a decision like having to push everything down, which the addition of buttons on top of arrows would require, we try to place the no scrolling rule above everything except (read my lips) no new clicks.

Keep up the good work, oh Shiny Domed One.
While we're aksin questions...is there some way us Garden Variety smugmuggers can force a style for a gallery? See, that "journal" style would be really nice for one of mine. Or is that degree of customization an incentive to upgrade to the super-unleaded level? BTW, I have no problem with such incentives--this ain't a gripe. |

Forcing a gallery style is actually a power user feature that goes with the customization stuff power users get.
It's amazing what some people do with that style. Check this out: http://hobson.smugmug.com/gallery/31286 I just re-wrote a bunch of help sections on how to force gallery styles, set fonts, etc., but unfortunately they're not live on the site yet. I hope we can push 'em live in the next day or two. I've never done a Journal gallery for my own personal stuff but I've got a need now so I'm gonna give it a try.
