It didn't look like the "spank-hawk" (or however Ross refers to that beater he rides - if he still has it). The rider died, at the scene, I believe. What a rotten way to start the long weekend. Condolences all around.

Interesting (but tragic). The initial report I heard (FOX news---50-50 it's wrong) made it sound like the motorcyclist was speeding.
The Trib story suggests the car was at fault.

More disturbing --- WTH was a 17yo kid doing in car on the Ryan at 5AM?
(specifically prohibited in IL : "IL - Initial Licensing Phase Drivers Age 16-17 - Nighttime driving restrictions Sun.-Thurs., 10 p.m.-6 a.m;")

AND with "carrying three other passengers when it collided with the motorcycle" ...
(IL law generally limits it to 1 passenger in first year of driving).

Newspaper reports: "xxxxxx was ticketed for driving without insurance, driving without a license and driving too slow."......so, I'd guess he wasn't too concerned with restrictions that come along with a license.

HOW is he not yet charged with Reckless? (or worse)?

The Ryan is one expressway I avoid when on two wheels.

Am I wrong? Didn't the motorcycle hit the car? no matter what the car did he was following too close?

Maybe. Maybe Not. Lots to consider. First and foremost, it's THE RYAN. It has more than it's share of crappy drivers (car , truck, AND bike).

I see this more and more, (and ESPECIALLY with GPS eq cars). The driver is looking for an exit and slows. Driver is often in wrong lane....Driver slows even more. Driver cuts across 3 or 4 lanes at 10 MPH to 'make' the exit. I'm sure we've all seen drivers stop and back up "just a few feet" to get to an exit.

Cycle hit (hard) at right rear corner of the Cadillac. Bike would (and could) have been travelling at light speed to do that kind of damage, >OR<, bike could have been travelling at a sane speed and car was not (likely, given the initial Police report), or both.

Just 2 hours ago, a lovely grandma type in an Audi A4 swept across 2 lanes (while on the brakes, of course), over a median, and into my lane to 'make' the 290/88 westbound split by Hillside. I've seen this so many times, I simply EXPECT cars to go either direction at that split.

The head-ons and the left-turn chops and the sideswipers are easy enough to understand and look for. I'd REALLY like to know the trigger on this one. Did the car jump out of nowhere? Was the bike driver impaired and/or an idiot?

It's not just the Ryan. How many times have you see some one on the toll road in the far left lane coming up to an IPass toll? Hard on the brakes, server to the right, then look if it is clear. Even though they are 100 yards past getting into the cash lanes.

A few weeks ago I was one 294 in the car in light traffic. When I can't see a thing from the smoke coming off the tires of the 18 wheeler with a full load of steel a few hundred yards in front of me. Some guy in a Smart car no less, stops because he was in the Ipass lane. He was on the shoulder getting out of his car when I passed. One would think to change his underwear. But most likely to go and pay the toll.

Saturdays and Sundays early morning are the only times I even think about taking the interstate. And then I usually head south or east.

I will see this at least once on the 4 iPass plazas I pass through on a typical trip to Indiana. Be paranoid. Anticipate stupid. Drive for the other guy as well as yourself.
