The 4th Annual / WMRS IV In Bishop CA (7/31-8/3)
Ok Ladies and Gentleman ( and I use the term loosely ), Boys and Girls, ADV Riders of all ages! It is time to announce the 4th annual WMRS Ride here in Bishop, CA.Send me a PM if you are IN Once a year the White Mountain Research Station has an open house. Located in the Bristlecone Pine Forest, this is the only time of the year that you can ride all the way up to the station and check it out ( 13K ft ). It is always the first Sunday in Augast, this years ride dates are 7-31-08 thru 8-3-08, with the open house on 8-3-08. The area is loaded with great dual sport riding and camping. This a great weekend of riding the high country , with much cooler temps. I will be making the trip, hope you can join me. The pic reports below say it all. Info On White Mountain Research Station: White Mountain Research Station, with its principal office located in the Owens Valley near Bishop, was established in 1950 to provide laboratory facilities for any qualified research investigator wishing to utilize the high-mountain environment for his or her work, and to serve as teaching facilities for field courses conducted in the region. There are four separate laboratory sites: one in the Owens Valley; a second at Crooked Creek, at an elevation of approximately 10,000 ft (2,090 m); a third at the base of Mt. Barcroft, at an approximate elevation of 12,500 ft (3,801 m), making it the 11th highest high-altitude station in the world and the fourth highest in North America; and a fourth, the Summit Laboratory, atop White Mountain Peak, at an elevation of 14,246 ft (4,340 m). The Summit Laboratory is the fourth highest high-altitude research facility in the world and the highest in North America. http://content.cdlib.org/xtf/view?do...2&brand=eschol Link to Pics that I have taken while riding up here http://stonewall.smugmug.com/gallery/779812#P-1-15 Ride Reports from WMRS I in 05 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php? t=90943 Ride Reports from WMRS II in 06 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157256 Ride Reports WMRS Ride III in 07 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254807 Extra info on the area. http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/ http://www.sonic.net/bristlecone/home.html http://www.wmrs.edu/ http://www.ca.blm.gov/index.html CAMPGROUND This year we will be using The Browns Owens River Campground. http://www.brownscampgrounds.com/owens.html It is located on the Benton Crossing Rd ( also known as the Green Church Rd ) 6 miles east of US 395. Turn East at the Green Church just north of Crowley Lake and just south of the Mammoth Airport. The campground has showers available from 8 am until 4pm, very clean restrooms, and a small store with Beer and Ice. They also hve a grill for Breakfast and Lunch. Cost is $10 dollars per day for a Motorcyle and tent, $20 per day for a pick up with 2 bikes or a pick up with trailer or a motorhome with a trailer. Pay at the store when you arrive. This campground can handle RV's of any size. If you like to fish, bring your gear. The Fly fishing is fantastic here. FYI this campground " Does Not Take Credit Cards" ( no land line, but cell phones work great ), but they will take a check and of course cash. For The Camping Challenged For those of you who want a room call the McGee Creek Inn at 760-935-4228 to book a room. Located 8 miles from the Campground. Here is some info on two companies that will drop off a camper at the camp ground for you: Sierra Vacation Trailer Rentals 760-935-4263 sierravactrir@aol.com Adventure In Camping 800-417-7771 www.adventurincamping.com These are lodges very close to the camp ground Toms Place also has cabins 760-935-4239 www.tomsplaceresort.com Rock Creek Lodge 877-935-4170 www.rockcreeklodge.com Rock Creek Lakes Resort 760-935-4311 www.rockcreeklake.com GAS Closest gas is at Crowley Lake General Store. Crowley lake exit on 395 10 miles south and in Mammoth Lakes 10 mile north. Saturday Night Dinner VOTE IN DINNER POLL @ http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=358181 Saturday Night Dinner $25 Per Person. Menu posted below. You pay at the Pack Station, I will not collect money for dinner. Meal time will be posted when I post the Dinner Poll in June. The location is at Reds Medows Pack Station, same as all earlier WMRS Rides. This is an optional Dinner. http://www.redsmeadow.com/ which is located in the Deviels Postpile National Monument. http://www.nps.gov/depo/depomain.htm Besides having a great BBQ, this alows us to ride our bikes into the Monument. Their is no POV's allowed into the Monument from 0700 to 1900 without camping reservations or dinner reservations at Reds Medows. Without eather of these you "MUST" ride the tour bus down and back out. As guest of the Pack Station we can enter the Monument as earliy as 1400 (2 PM ) and take in the sights. I have attached the menu: Saturday Night Dinner MENU BBQ Tri-Tip, BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans, vegetables, salads, apple cobbler dessert, with Tea or lemmonade for bevrages. They sell BEER in the store but have no wine or liquor license, so BYOB if you want anything else. Web site: www.redsmeadow.com. Devils Postpile is at www.nps.gov/depo/. I highly recomend this for two reasons 1st its a great meal & 2nd Its a chance to ride through an area that is very regulated and is a smaller version of Yosemite. By being allowed in at 1400hrs you can see all the sites without riding the bus. The NFS does charge $7 per person to acces the valley ( even the ones on the bus ). We could all ride what ever we want during the day and meet here for dinner. Serach the web sites listed and let me know what you think. E-mail or PM me with any questions. You can also shower for free before dinner. Vote if you are going to Reds Meadow for Dinner here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246710 2nd Option McGee Creek Inn has a good Cajun food , dinner only. Toms Place Resort Prime Rib Dinner every Saturday night for $10.50. Plus other items. 3rd All of those exspensive places in Mammoth Other Activities This Weekend If You Like Blues Bands: http://www.mammothbluesbrewsfest.com/ Their is the 13 th Annual Mammoth Festival of Beers & Bluesapalooza friday–saturday, august 1 & 2, 2008 Radio Telescope Open House Tours on Monday 8-4 On display will be the worlds largest and most powerful millimeter-wave radio astronomy observatory. 5232 miles (plus the ride up the hill) is to much for a weekend trip.
