Nice, a XL thread.
Bought my XL few days ago, its not the cleanest but she's pretty original except for the headlightplastics.

My first kickstart single so I have to learn the kickstartprocedure a bit better.

Its a XL500R from 1982.

Just picked this up

Here's my new to me 1982 XL500R I just picked up for $150.

It's in pretty poor shape. The exhaust needs attention, brakes do not work, and lots of missing parts, but I have spark at the plug and was able to kickstart it. Looks to be a good project.

I plan on starting one since this will be my first build. Be prepared for a bunch of stupid questions from a newbie

If you end up tearing into both of those motors I would be very interested in a comparison of the electrics. If I have my info straight the xl500s is 6 volt and the xl500r is 12 volt. I have a xl500s I would like to know if there are any easy swap out options for the stator in a 12v conversion.

PS. regarding your reply to the stearing head question there is a tapered bearing kit available from allballs and no need to know the size just order by the model number.

looks pretty clean for a 30 year old bike that ws not the type of bike that was ever ment to be pampered. Way cleaner than mine was when I got it. Do a close inspection of the coil for cracks, they are a bit sensitive to heat and are located right above the head.
