Uncorking 2007 XR650R...stock needle only has 2 positions!

I had to order the two jets and needle at a dealership since they didnt have the parts in stock. They couldnt get the needle so I wound up with the two jets. I called all of my local dealers and finally wound up ordering the needle through one of them. I figured I'd decork it with the stock needle and put to fourth position like I have read about people doing. My D10A needle on the bike only has two positions! Has anyone ran this two position stock needle in the stock positon with the 172 or 175 jet? Does it run ok?

I had the same thing happen a couple of months ago with a 2007 XRR. I did a search of the Yahoo XR650R group and there has been some discussion on this. They recommended buying the older needle in order to do a proper uncorking. I ordered the parts also but because I wanted to try it out I did the rest of the jetting and put it back together with the stock new style needle. Mine runs fine so far and as long as it does I'm going to leave it in and change it if/when I need to go back in for jetting adjustments. Like I said, mine seems to run OK but I should mention that I kept the stock Honda air filter and I did not drill out the silencer because of noise concerns. The rest of the uncorking I did but mine will not be as lean as the ones with high flow filters and open pipes. Hope this is of some help.

Here's what I am running thus far ( will try more changes later )
1996 XR650L
#52 pilot jet
#152 main
Stock needle and no shim
Stock slide
KN air flter
Stock air box ( no holes yet )
White Bros. header pipe and muffler, straight through, no baffle plate.
Runs good, maybe a little lean.

I put it back together with the stock needle, it was already on the bottom setting (2nd from top). It runs great compared to corked up. Way more power and revs, and it runs alot better cold. I am using a 172 with the stock needle, and 68s pilot. The HRC tip is alot louder, I might try the stock exhaust to see how much worse that is.

Hezekiamunson, if you have an HRC tip and can switch back and forth let us know what the difference is if any. I've left the exhaust stock so far because I like it quiet, especially considering some of the places I ride. Also, I haven't seen any other dual-sported dirt bikes around here and I don't want to attract alot of attention.
