Exploring the Trans - Wisconsin trail

the Trans Wisconsin Adventure trail

Wednesday 5-14-2008, 9:28pm:
The sounds of coyotes howling their praise over a recent kill is the only sound that breaks the silence at our campsite at Perch Lake in the Chequamegon - Nicolet national forest in Northern Wisconsin. Dave and I listen to them howl as we sit and enjoy our basic meal of Spam and ramen noodles cooked over single burner camp stoves.

We arrived at this campground at dusk after logging in a 320 mile day of exploring a route I mapped out that crosses the entire state of Wisconsin, mainly off pavement.

Our route for the day started at my house in south central Wisconsin and our hopes were to see if this route I mapped out was worth a hoot. I know all the roads on my route that are south of my house, and most of the ones within 100 miles north, so we had the get some miles in and see what was out there.

A 30 mile pavemnt blast started out our day to get to more interesting riding. Logging is a big industry in some of these areas and with the late spring, lots of rain and logging traffic, some of the "roads" were in rough shape.

Dave on his trusty KLR on the Clark county ATV trails.

We both rode 650 thumpers and they proved to be great machines for this route, very capable off road and not too bad on the highways. Daves KLR has a sweet set of Husky forks on it and Happy trails bags and my DR650 has Ortlieb bags over Happy trails racks.

After riding a big chunk of ATV trails, we hopped on some fun, fast, straight gravel roads and kept pushing North.

One of the great things about traveling by motorcycle is all the great people you meet. At our first gas stop, we were approached by at least 3 different people wondering about our trip. they wanted to know about the bikes, where we were headed and to tell us a little about the trips they have taken.

We found this neat little cabin shortly after our gas stop.

One of my favorite areas to ride is the Perkinstown ATV trails. Very scenic area and great riding. We hopped on a small portion of the ATV trails then got back on route.

Don't get too cocky on those gravel roads, you never know what is around the corner!

We found this abandoned hunting cabin. Seems like someone up and left and never came back since there were alot of things left behind.

What a great day to not be at work and out enjoying the scenery!

The Jump River fire tower, no longer in use. There were once 38 of these towers within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, though today only nine remain standing.

Husky Forks

I never noticed those Husky forks on your KLR Dirty Dave-----I bet they make that a whole different feeling bike. Next time I see you I want to talk to you about those------maybe I could put the KLR forks on my 610

Hell--------those forks have brakes on them----what a novel idea !!!!!
I could sure save a lot of wear and tear on my boot soles with that setup !!

This ride looks like heaven on wheels. Any chance of getting a route map out of that Garmin?

usually i say improving a klr is like putting lipstick on a pig...but my fork seals were leaking and the stock brake works...kinda. all said and done a few hundred bucks needed to be spent(im cheap)

i had this supermoto brake set up sitting around the garage and these husky forks. it ended up costly me $0 for the conversion and it can easily be put back to stock at any time.

the only problem is with a well sorted front end, only makes the rear feel worse...what have i started!!!!

Illinois ride

Hey Chadd,

I may put together an Illinois ride----of course it will be in Big Dog fashion and be called:

The Big Trans Illinois Trail

In Short

The Big T.I.T.Ride

People could ride the T.I.T. and then continue on down to the T.W.A.T

Next up was a stop at Big Falls county park, one of the highlights of the trip!

This park would be a great place to camp!!

Found a nice classic to fix up.

Took a side trip to find another fire tower, but it had been torn down.
