With all that DR650 power to hold on too I must focus on keeping front tire down!

I take it back that "four wheelers are good for nothing!" Pluric gets colored star stickers for this honorable service!

I really do need to wean myself off the quad addiction. It's just that
they work great year round. With the weather supposing to improve
this week the two wheelers can start coming off the trailer and out
from under their covers.

Rode with some trail riders this weekend and totally got the bug. Also got the bug for something lighter so the XRR is for sale/trade if anyone is interested. Looking for a KTM 450 or 520-530. My consider other brands but the 6 speed and hydraulic clutch appeals...

No I mean mostly single track. The XRR certainly hung and I actually did OK for a few hours and on some pretty technical stuff. But reality is I have a lot of stuff attached to the bike now that make it more oriented for ADV. I could pull it off and get an extra 15-25 lbs off the bike, which I think would help, but it still wouldn't be a 450 or 525 and takes away from the "vision" I originally had for the XR when I first started building all of that stuff.

I rode a '08 450 EXC for about 20 minutes, including getting it up to speed in 6th gear, and I think I'd rather go the route of having a lighter bike and making it work for slab here and there and being able to ride single track, other than the other way around. The 450 EXC also pulled harder and seemed to have more than plenty of power for the road believe it or not. So that is my thinking...

In a perfect world I'd have both but not in the cards right now, I think... So this is my route, I think...

Get the KTM, you'll love it.

You can't argue with a bike that weighs 262 pounds ready to ride, AND has E-start, and can hang on a 2000 mile loop no problem.

Buying a bike for how it rides slab makes no sense at all to me. People tout how great their bikes are on slab, but who the hall wants to ride slab and then suffer on the fun stuff, the dirt.

yup, exactly... DD from Black Diamond let me ride his new KTM. What a mistake that was. Expensive, yes, but nice... So that's my thinking... Even something like a '01 would be OK but something not too old and in decent shape would be nice. If I can get $3500 that will be plenty of 450 or 525 I figure... I'd take you up on yours even if it was still for sale..

Decided to keep it. And for the record, that was my wife's decision, not mine.

The KTM RFS motor is solid, with the last production year being 2007. The EXC bikes have a wide six, my XC has a slightly narrower six speed tranny, which amounts to about 350-400rpm difference at 65mph. I like the narrow tranny on the 450, because it makes 6th gear really usable, instead of just really tall. You pay a bit for it on slab, but slab is for bitches

I was hypervigilant changing the oil on my KTM on that loop GISkev and I did, but the oil always looked good, and I'm sure it would be fine to go beyond the 600 mile interval. That said, it takes all of 5 minutes to change the oil, so what's the big deal?

The 690 is nice, but picking that thing up going up Ben Lomond or riding it down Five Miles of Hell just isn't going to be fun, so shoot down the middle and get a 450/525 that you can ride everything with. Or be like Pluric and own three of everything.
