Here's an update.

David called me just after 6pm (PDT) today and LDF's bike has died. He & I chatted for a bit trying to figure out the problem and it sounds like the stator has died. The bike stopped, they jumped it but it was only putting out 2 volts which isn't right. They're in a little town about 25-30 miles from Grants Pass OR. The plan when I hung up with him was to get into Grants Pass (or Medford) tomorrow, rent a U-haul and take the bikes to Seattle to their friends and see about getting LDF's bike running before they have to fly back to NYC on the 26th. If he calls me again, I'll get you updated again.

Stator has easy access, takes an Allen wrench once inside(and maybe an impact Phillips on the starter cover :( ), fingers crossed

close, but no cigar

60 mi. from port O, blueberry died. Likely culprit is the stator. Unable to field repair. bike unrideable. We instituted full-on extrication mode before night fell. 50 mile footpeg:footpeg tow to Grant's Pass, OR via I-5. Don't try that at home, kids.discussing options tonight @ motel 6. coupla bike shops in GP, otherwise medford, otherwise U-haul to somewhere else. if anyone has any good ideas or repair shop recommendations, please post them here, or give me a call: nine 17-216-1595. thanks.d&f

update

god bless the city THAT NEVER SLEEPS. steve (vfr870) at this moment is pulling the stator from Roy's (RTHuey's) fragged drz motor, is boxing it up, and will be overnighting it bright and early. steve: you are a god among men.as soon as we finish our beers, we'll book the motel 6 for another night, tomorrow we'll do laundry properly, and perform much needed oil changes. if the problem is indeed the stator, we're back in business, and are right now debating whether to finish the TAT and hightail north (LDF), or to skip ahead and pick up the OBCDT as previously routed / scheduled (me... sort of)..will post updates as possible.

Lots of resources here in Seattle to help you travelers iff'n can be of use!

The weather this year for late summer is fantastic and it would be a shame to waste it by being sidelined by a (minor?) mechanical issue.

Let us know what you need, and it'll happen.

I have a DRZ, and I'll yank something off of it and overnite it to you if needed.

PM me for my phone number

Doc and LDF,
If you can, finish the TAT.
That way it will be out of the way. You can get to Seattle easily enough and then plan the next trip from there.
It felt really good to hit the beach at the end of the TAT last week, as you probably could tell by talking to me on the phone.
If I can help you out with troubleshooting give me a call.
Best of luck,
Doug

Thinking aloud with no expertise on the subject, not even a Holiday Inn Express last night....

The stator is pretty low tech. Wouldn't it more likely be the VR/rectifier, loose connections or chafing?

I would have regulator/rectifier sent as well.

Good luck,

John

Still might be the stator.

We had 12 DRZs at work and found if you tax the charging system too much (we use cooling fans on a dirt only version, slow riding 100+ temps), the stators will fail. Ours all gave up at around 400 hrs. So it is possible that it's the stator.

Stator is a common failure on DRZ around 16-20k miles. But, do the diagnostics from the manual first. Easy to see what is going on and whether to change the stator or R/R.
