You can miss a shot by 2-3 stops and still save it with a dslr.

a 35mm shooting Velvia Slide film, not so much.

I'm glad I learned on Film, I'm REALLY glad I don't have to pay for my mistakes anymore. I spent a lot of money developing completely Clear and Solid black slides

This is the kind of statement that leaves me scratching my head.

Ignoring the exposure latitude that digital buys you in post and without arguing that versus "push" processing, differences in dynamic range, etc.

Learning on a DSLR means not paying for the results of goofed exposures. And, you immediately find out whether or not you goofed.

Learning about how films behave specifically is another story.

Sorry but I beg to differ.

Back in the day, if you were 1/4 stop off it was definitely noticeable. 1/2 stop was not really fixable.

With digital, you don't 'immediately' know. It's impossible to tell what the exposure is really doin on that little screen. So it's harder to 'learn' IMO.

But you are right, and that was kinda my point; that with digital you do not have to pay for the privilege of screwing up. I mean there were times that I made a rudimentary error and shot 3-4 rolls of film with the wrong ISO on the meter or something. That was 30-40 dollars gone... With NO pictures to show for it.

OTOH, that was a pretty strong motivation that went into the learning 'process' too. When shooting sports I'd time my shots pretty good, because I couldn't physically carry more than 10-15 rolls of film and be 'mobile' now you can just fire off 300 shots, pick the best one and throw away the others.

Right on!

Looking forward to the next leg. It took me four straight days of neglecting my work to get through this thread. Worth every minute. Well done.

Route draft

So...
It's a rainy sunday, the line at the MoMa snaked around the block (we wanted to see the Bresson exhibit, but it's there through June). We came back home and have spent the afternoon sifting through the route, creating waypoints which identify the page of the Backroads Atlas which covers that section. I've attached the whole mess to this post, if anyone's interested, feel free to download, and open it in GoogleEarth, or the Garmin software of your choice.

Some nomenclature: FRSD = auto-routing set to Follow Road + Shortest Distance. FRFT = Follow Road + Fastest Time. For those routes, you have to have a navigable mapset open and recalculate for the routing to happen, otherwise it will appear as point-to-point. If not specified, the route is point-to-point, and you can have any mapset open.

Magenta routes are what we'll be taking, Yellow routes are alternates. All tracks are from others' actual rides -- green ones are where we'll be riding, yellow are alternates.

"X" waypoints specify what mapset we'll have open for that section: IbyTopo = Ibycus topographic, CNNA = City Navigator North America, etc.

I've waypointed gas stations, and specified the distance to next gas in the notes. I've also included waypoints for a few sights, and liquor stores, and campgrounds. If anyone has any suggestions for other waypoints or route intel, we're all ears.

And here's how the itinerary spaces out. Nothing cast in stone here... just a point of reference so on any given day we can see how badly we're off schedule, then we may skip the trips out to Hyder and Telegraph Creek.

Next chore: sort the packing lists, and knock the cobwebs out of the gear!

Doc & LDF,

Looks like you're ready. Those 300+ slab days will be nasty but it's just part of the gig. Can't wait to read this installment of Mobius!

I've been to those 2 places and talked to many who have done your planned route and they say Stewart/ Hyder/ Salmon Glacier and Telegraph Creek were at the top of the list for trip highlights... Unless the weather is real crappy it may be a mistake to pass them by.....

I hear you -- Telegraph creek would be the last of the non-pavement 'til Mobius 6. It wouldn't be by choice but realistically, if we have a breakdown, or get held up by weather in the first half, once we hit the Cassiar at Cranberry Junction, there are precious few options to get to Anchorage faster besides cutting out one or both of those side-trips. Ultimately, we've got a plane to catch, and at some point, that's got to take priority.

If you look at what happened in M4, we lost two days in Grants Pass, but made them up by skipping ahead driving on pavement along the coast (we missed Crater Lake as a consequence.) We've always had bail-out options like that, but once we hit Northern BC -- not so much.
