What surprises me is that there's still so much of the place still standing. AK winters are the worst and the summers aren't always much better. I guess it had the most modern hospital north of Seattle back in the day, better than what was in Anchorage.

She got a phonecall from the Ministry of Agriculture biosecurity people a week before Christmas, telling her that they couldn't allow it to be imported unless they heat-treated it first.

Keep up the excellent RR, guys.

'Bout caused me to spit out my coffee this morning!

Great RR as usual.

Jiffy Pop, the best sponsor we ever had:

That's too funny! I gotta say, After 3000 miles on the back of the bike, I would have cracked it open in a heartbeat if we needed to. Say, for instance, to repack wheel bearings with some heavy weight grease.

Jiffy Pop is a way better sponsor than Jiffy Lube, or even BMW.

Just don't never eat the stuff.

weee!

loving that the report is continuing, i'm sure the break was a good reset - it can get hard posting to a report day after day with such stunning photos.

wow!!

I admit to not doing much of anything else for the past week or so reading the RR from the beginning to now!! Incredible!! I admit to being a slabber only (heavy tourers don't do well off-road, as I've found out!!) but now I'm re-thinking the whole thing!! Thank you for a completely different perspective than what I had previously. I can't wait for the next installments.
Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!
(Also got me through one major snowstorm reading about riding!!)

It really started to hit home

that we were running out of dirt, (not just for this trip, but for most of the next as well)

Even though the weather was kinda lousy, we were soaking in the scenery,

Every once in a while, we'd see sunlight dappling a mountainside,

or a patch of blue sky, and that was enough to keep our spirits up.

As we approached the

Copper/Chitina river crossing, I taped the long downhill, and we took some photos of the fish wheels:

Through the railroad cut

we were spit back onto pavement, at Chitina. We stopped for a snack and gas.

Can you tell someone didn't want her picture taken?

These out-and-back

excursions feel like rewinding a DVD on the return trip.

Still, it's a different ride in the opposite direction. Past the 4-mile, 3-mile etc. lakes

I noticed a couple walking on the side of the road with fishing poles, and tried to see if it was Sarah P, I mean, there are only so many people up here... it was pretty inevitable that we'd run into her.

Instead, I saw something even better:

Edgerton to Richardson

Richardson to Valdez,
Valdez to Whittier,
Whittier to Anchorage...

Navigation is simple like that up here. I kept having this song running through my head, maybe you can hear it towards the end of this clip?

(Thanks, Tom Waits)

"...No shirt, no coat
Take me on a flat boat
Dover down to Covington
Covington to Louisville
Louisville to Henderson
Henderson to Smithland
Smithland to Memphis
Memphis down to Vicksburg
Vicksburg to Natchez
Going down to Natchez
Take me on a flat boat
Dover Dam to Covington
Covington to Louisville
Louisville to Henderson
Henderson to …"

from "Don't go into that barn" on the album Real Gone
