I was thinking more like her bike draws more current for some reason causing overheating of the stator coils. Putting an amp meter on there might reveal some answers.

Well sounds like a spare is a good idea then.

Did you save the failed part? Maybe an autopsy would be informative. Why did it fail? I will volunteer to take it apart and see where it failed.

This kind of bullseye target pattern is typical for a Lyme disease tick bite, but I highly doubted there were ticks in Alaska (there aren't and Lyme disease has never been reported from AK for the record). Of course, LDF was highly concerned, and certain that was what it was. Or a bedbug bite.

(BTW, in all seriousness, if you get a funny looking bite or rash at any time, take a photo as soon as you can, ideally with a ruler or some other size reference in the frame. Two days later, it can be more difficult than you think to remember how it looked and how big it was. It'll be very helpful in making the diagnosis if it turns out to be something serious.)

As an ED Doc you must know that if the critter wasn't seen it's always a "spider"...at least it is here in Colorado. I saw one confirmed Brown recluse bit in 20 years work in the ED.

We continued to make our way towards Tok:

The big St. Elias range loomed in the distance.

We passed gas at Posty's, and recollected meeting the young guy who we met last august working there who had washed out of the new world economy having been on wall street.

Wonder how he's doing.

just a short snippet of riding -- it's 5:30pm, we've got a hundred miles to Tok.

Just cruisin'. Actually, a cruiser with a big windscreen would have suited this riding just fine.

I took a photo of the ground where it went -- can you find it?

LDF used her x-ray vision to locate it -- I didn't want to give up. That thing is a chick magnet.

We set up camp,

Checked out the place -- we were the only guests, and the steam/sauna wasn't yet fired up. No biggie.

I've found that wedding rings are more trouble than they're worth. It's just to awkward when you're caught with it in your pocket or trying to put it back on because big ugly is heading your way.

Glad you did find it. I lost my wedding ring on a backcountry 2-track ride in New Zealand, ironically right at one of the locations they filmed Lord of The Rings.

Stopped to take photos, it was hot, and when I pulled the sticky riding glove off the ring came with it, right into foot-tall dense grass and brush. Never did find it, maybe the Golem will...
