Here you go old goat, saw this on the GR cl.

Looks pretty sharp in white. All you would need is a Col. Sanders style riding suit and you'd be beating the pirate chics off with your cane!!

I was thinking about taking a look at that. Half the miles as mine for half the price.

Great riding weather here... Cool, not raining right now and no festival this week. At least no festival that I know of.

What a cold ass ride. I'll have to stop by Thans and borrow his winter gloves. It looks and feels like November out there. Great blueberry pie!

Thanks for the offer. Got home before frostbite set in...It was 57 degrees by the lakeshore but felt like 47. Hit a few sprinkles too. No sooner did I get home and the neighbor came over with warm blueberry cobbler. I'll be shitting like a goose if I eat one more blueberry.

Looking for Information

My wife and I have to go to Wisconsin the first week in October and we are going to take the opportunity to cross the lake on the ferry and then make the loop around the lake. I'm looking for info on must-see roads/sights (or sites)/restaurants along the way. She'll be on her f650gs and doesn't mind gravel, but nothing more adventurous than that.

Anything will helps since we've never been in western MI or the UP.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Well, welcome to MI in advance. Some of us did a similar trip a year ago. Here's what we did.

I'll try to summarize, but I'm on my phone so you'll need to Google a bit.

Depending on what Ferry you take you'll either end up in Muskegon or Ludington.

If it's Muskegon look up Scenic Dr through the Muskegon State Park and follow that into Whitehall. You can stop there to eat at Dogs and Suds or keep going north to Pent water and stop at the Brown Bear for the biggest burger you'll ever eat.

The next stop on your way north is Ludington which is a nice little town and a really nice state park if you're looking for a place to camp.

From there north you can either follow 31 or taken back roads to M22 which follows the lakeshore north through the Leelenau Peninsula and dumps you out in Traverse City. Also a nice little town with lots of good restaurants.

If you're looking to camp head a little ways south to Cycle Moore campground. It's a motorcycle campground, shop and museum. It's only $7 per person for a tent site and they have a nice, covered pavilion where everybody hangs out at night. On weekends they even have free ice cream and popcorn.

If you are winos make sure to check out Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City. Lots of wineries up there making some damn good stuff. My favorite is Bower's Harbor. They have good cider too.

Then head north on M119 which will take you through the Tunnel of Trees. It's one of the best roads in Michigan, but it can get busy on weekends. At the end of this is Leg's Inn which is a nice lunch spot.

Make your way towards Mackinac City which is a neat little tourist town without being to anonnyingly touristy. Get some fudge and smoked fish.

Cross the bridge and head for Tahquamenon Falls. Maybe some Yooper can give you good advice on a dirt route along the Lake Superior shore, but when I did this ride it was road only so we went south into the Newberry area and stayed overnight in a DNR rustic camping area south of town. These have water and outhouses for $10 a night or so. Beautiful view in the one we stayed at.

Make sure to hit HR-58 from Grand Marais to Munising. This is THE best road I've ridden in Michigan. Some call it the Skyway of the north.

Follow the Lk Superior shore to Marquette which is also a nice little town with a few good breweries to choose from.

LOTS of dirt to ride north of Marquette. In fact, most roads up there are not paved. Most folks take the highway straight West into L'Anse and then north into Copper Harbor. I recommend taking highway 41 all the way to its northern terminus at the end if the Keewenau Peninsula.

The next big thing to see in the UP are the Porcupine Mountains. These were the highlight of this trip I'm my opinion. We stayed in a DNR rustic campground right where the falls head out into Lake Superior. Awesome.

That is really quite frightening. He was doing pretty well until that choice as an eating place.... over say THE ANTLERS in SSMarie, or the place in Glen Arbor.
