Hey Charley, ever replace a pinion carrier seal on a Honda? I got a little oil leaking from my differential. Don't know if I need any special tools? I thought only BMWs had shaft drive problems?

WHich seal? should be three of them. The one on the pinion shaft itself?
Can be done with no special tools.

Its the seal in the pinion retainer nut itself. Plus a O ring. The nuts gotta come out to get at the seal. Its a big notchy nut. Didn't know if a special tool was needed or if there was a trick to screwing it out? Maybe I should just take it to Shawmut Hills? They could probably do it in a few minutes for just a hundred bucks. I've never heard of a shafty Honda leaking? Wish you were a little closer. Thanks

Your Honda has shaft drive trouble? Better check those uncheckable valves while you're at it

AND for the second joke....I heard shaft trouble could become a problem in old age, but I think they have medicine for that now. Good idea to check with Charlie to confirm.

I thought about adding a Viagra to the oil to make the seal swell. It does have 50K so something should need servicing besides just oil changes.

Sadly, my schedule will not permit me tagging along this year. Good for you for putting this together and posting it up here though

I rode the southern portion of this route 2 years ago and what you have planned is ambitious mileage for sure. Doable, but not much time for stopping to smell the roses.

Not that I ever plan that into my trips, but I figure I'll give you the advice that I never take.

I still love that Triumph.

A get together is necessary soon! I just happen to know of a nice little shop in a town just about halfway between us. The owner is a grumpy old cuss, but his wife is nice. I'll bring the beer!

We will see--may extend the trip by a day and come back Thursday instead of Wednesday. Riding in the cold and drizzle is not a lot of fun, but we shall see. If the weather forecast is horrible, may rethink a lot of the trip and do something different completely. But ride we will. (I just read in the paper that a lot of Superior is still frozen--last year at this time 2.5% was frozen, this year over 50% still frozen).

Fair enough. I will say that if shit hits the fan (a bike goes down, etc.) you do have some built in time by just skipping a lot of the contours of the southern coast of Lake Superior. It would suck, but it could be done if necessary.

That is usually how I put my rides together. Lots of cool stuff to ride/see that all or some of which can be skipped if something bad happens.

The last week long ride I did saw a crash between riders AND (unrelated to the crash) a rider spending a day in the hospital. We got home on time and still hit the major features we intended.

Good luck and hopefully your luck is better than mine!

I might be on Sunday, but I don't think we have anyone from that area that posts here.

Sunday seems like a good day to trailer up to Muskegon and play around in the dirt.
