CannonTrek.Ca (CT VIII - Rockin' Ontario)

Just finished up another CannonTrek. This time we took in some fabulous riding in Ontario.

What a blast!

Looking forward to the recap Bryan. As you know left camp Saturday at 7:00 pm for the 550+ mile drive to Detroit. body was still quite full of adrenalin so made it home with only one gas stop . rolled in the driveway at 4:00 am.

At the Sault, the U.S. customs guy asked who I was riding with, when I said " some people I met on the internet" , he replied "oh your with that group" and waived the car inspector off and sent me on my way. No lines at the Border at 11:00 pm at night

Many thanks for a challenging and enjoyable event. Thanks to all the others for the good times

Day 0 - Arrival in Elliot Lake, ON

The format for this iteration of the CannonTrek was a little bit different. Normally we load up the bikes and ride up to 300 miles per day in a group of up to 19 riders.


This time I set it up to operate out of two base camps over a period of several days. The first was in Elliot Lake followed by a move to Providence Bay on Manitoulin Island.


Elliot Lake came into being as the result of uranium discoveries there in the early 1950s. A hard rock mining boom took off with several mines producing uranium for the US. This was pretty much wilderness up until the mining boom.


The US eventually found their own sources of uranium and open pit mining elsewhere made the hard rock mining in Elliot Lake too costly. The mines closed and since then the town has reinvented itself as a retirement and recreation community.


The population is around 13,000+ and the town is well developed while still being in a "wilderness" setting.

Day 0 - Continued

There had been a heatwave going on back home during this period. It wasn't much better in Ontario. I think that on at least one day the humidex was at least 40. The heat was a factor in our riding for sure.

Once I got to town, I set up camp and waited for the others to arrive. We stayed in a city campground right in town. There was a shower, water on the sites, and a hydro connection which proved useful for operating a fan at night.


Proeasy (Paul) showed up next having come from near Detroit. Camping in town was very convenient as it was only a few blocks to Tim Horton's for breakfast.


4-s-hsky (Terry) came from Illinois.


vetMXR (Dan from near Detroit) came in and freeflow and proeasy helped him unload.


Jeff (freeflow) and Shelly (speshel) came from near Green Bay.


Klay came from Minnesota.


vwboomer (Erik) came from Sheboygan, WI.


Nicole (number8teen) came from Milwaukee.


While people had some time to kill, some took a tour around town.


There is a mining museum in the community center that is worth seeing.




There is also a nice mining memorial adjacent to a very scenic lake in town.




Some might like to visit with some old retired guys at the local model railroad club in the community center. Nice folks.

Day 0 - Continued

Once everyone got in I loaded up GPS units with tracks for rides in the area.


We then took a group street ride for an orientation around the town. The President of the Chamber of Commerce stopped down to see me one morning. He said that when we took the group ride around town on our dirt bikes they were having a city council meeting and they saw us. They were very happy to have us there and the purpose of the President's visit was to make sure we were well taken care of during our stay. The town promotes ATV use on their local trails but doesn't say much about dual sport motorcycle use. There is some fantastic riding here and the community would be well served encouraging more dual sporters to come to Elliot Lake to enjoy their community and the local trails.


The moving air felt good on our tour. It was very hot.


We rode up to an overlook above the town. Spectacular views.


The air was heavy with humidity so the visibility was impaired.


I'll borrow a few pictures from my visit in May as they show the view a bit better.






You can see the North Channel on Lake Huron and Manitoulin Island in the distance.








There is a shopping mall/hotel in the city center.






There was a nice playground on top of the overlook as well.


Time to head back for something to eat and some very cool and refreshing beers.




There were some foxes that kind of ran things around the campground. They would come out from across the street around dusk and forage at the camp. They were very habituated to people.


Obviously people had been feeding these animals. If you engaged one, it would approach you seeking a handout. If you sat around the fire they would hang around a short distance away. One swiped a dishrag that smelled of salmon and ran back across the street with it.

I think it took me about 1/2 hour to get back across. A long drive but well worth the trip!

Our morning loop. It is about 60 miles. We soon learned not to measure in miles but to measure in hours instead (heh-heh).


To warm up a little, we went right into some sections of slick mud and water and steep and rocky climbs.


People started off taking it easy until they got their dirt legs back.










The riders will pop in to tell you what bike they were riding and how it worked for them.




Of course, steepness never seems to show well.






Lots of "Use at You Own Risk" signs around.








I think this steep climb had several lifts. It is close to the city and well inside the city limits.


I think that since it was still early in the ride people were being more deliberate on these climbs. Eventually people conceded that you just had to hit it hard and scoot up the hills taking your beating as you go.


There were a lot of loose rocks and unexpected hops on this stuff.


Without momentum, traction for a climb was lacking.




I think everyone enjoyed these big rocks. Sometimes they were like big paved driveways.






It was hot, and you had to work hard, but people were having a blast. And we had only covered a few miles so far . . .
