Day ride - Canberra to Captains Flat
For those new to Canberra here is a short mornings ride that runs through some nice scenery and ends up at the old mining town of Captains Flat. There are plenty of side roads to explore along the way. Its a 168km loop starting from the Lanyon shopping centre or a 200km ride if you come back on the same dirt roads.
Here's the link to the map and directions from Google Maps.
I headed out through Tharwa and turned onto Smiths Road to Angles Crossing.
From bright sunlight at Angle Crossing to mist and fog on Tinderry Road
The only other water crossing.
The Captains Flat Hotel - Things can't be that good in town if the pub is only open three day's per week. The pubs for sale.
Some of the old shops have had a makeover.
Maybe ET would find this image attractive.
Ore loading machinery
And finally an old cottage - for sale
This ride can be completed easily in a morning and could be extended by taking the Hoskington road out to Bungendore rather than riding the tar back to Queanbeyan.

what a far ken champion idea!! I love that you have attached the route so that others can follow in your footsteps. I was only thinking the other day that it would be nice if some (I'd like turn by turn) directions were included in ALL ride reports. This would allow others to enjoy what the author did!
Thanks a million!

Things have changed at the Pub, it was only open Sat & Sun a couple of months ago.
I seem to recall that even the locals have given up on it.
It's a nice old pub, had the longest bar in Australia for a while and a painting of a naked woman over the bar (i think it was called Chloe).
