2008 Great River Gravel Ride planning thread

July 18-20 2008

It’s now time to get down to the serious planning for this years gravel ride. I am working on the details but this is what I can tell you so far.

The ride:
3 day 600+ mile ride
This year’s ride is going to be a self supported ride where we carry our camping gear and camp at different places every night. We are meeting Thursday night in Prairie Du Chien Wisconsin at a yet to be determined spot, and leaving Friday morning and doing a big loop up into Wisconsin then crossing over into Iowa at the Lansing bridge and barely hitting southern Minnesota and ending up the day at a campground in Northeastern Iowa. Saturday morning we will take off early again and probably meet up with some riders who are only joining us for the day. We will ride down through Iowa and cross into Illinois for a bit then back into Iowa and ending up near Maquoqueta.
Sunday will lead us from camp up to the Mississippi and crossing on the Cassville car ferry and back to PDC to finish the loop.

This ride will be perfect for the 650cc and larger DS bikes. We will have some tougher sections, but those can be avoided.

This route requires a GPS to navigate the route, or at least the ability to keep up with someone that does. We are working on the GPS file and will have that done soon. Please email me at chad@lonewolfexpeditions.com to get on the list for the GPS file, please specify that you want the gravel ride file.

Please post here or PM or email me to let me know if you’re coming to the ride, and whether or not you’re doing the full ride or just a portion.

I'm in.

Maybe for Thursday night, but definitely for the rest.

I like the format! Ideal for anyone who has plans or dreams of longer adventures to sort out their packing list and gear strategies while they are still within range of a Wal Mart.

Any suggestions for a general vicinity to stay Fri night in order to meet you guys on Saturday morning?

Right now, I'd guess Marquette / Mcgregor Iowa area.

Got your email too!

Cool, glad to hear you coming this year.

I think its a great way to get your travel style sorted out in a safe environment. Load it up, ride it, if it doesn't work, try it again.
