I agree with you. Flat track style is a niche within a niche.

Around here, it's usually guys who are into vintage bikes that like the "flat track styled" Sportsters...

The "nuovo bikers" who shop at the big-box HD stores have no clue.

The XR1200 will be a low volume bike by HD standards. Hopefully they are prepared for that. It has a chance to do well with non-traditional HD customers. The V-Rod- and Buell- types.

Things are a little different now at HD than they were in '83 when they simply stuck an exotic XR-derived engine into a stock XLX-61 chassis.

This time the XR tribute bike has inverted forks, aluminum swingarm, Buell engine pieces, and a few other nice bits...

P.S. glad you've been able to get your Storz bike's handling sorted.

You give good advice for selling the bike. I figure I can use the bike for a year and then decide if I want to reconvert, then sell it for about the then current price (which might be my market value now )

I like the looks, it's just rat enough for me and now it handles.
Fact is the bike might just sell since it actually has some horsepower and handling capability that none of its predicessors had. You're right on the tail section, it needs to be more XR or XLCR than the one for Europe. Otherwise it ain't far off base. The motor treatment has more flat track heritage than any other treatment would. Price should be right though. Time will tell...

Torags...how 'bout a pic of your sexy-ass bike for reference? I, too, like the way it looks. I'd buy it from you if I had ready cash and if the price was right for both of us

I'm hearing they're going to go for about $10 - 11K, which isn't bad.

And it's rarely about the hp around here. A well ridden bike with 50hp can kick the ass of a moderately ridden liter bike on the roads here in the bay area. It's all about flickability and chassis composure.

How flickable do you suppose a 586-lb motorcycle will be?

???wtf

I think it it will be a big flop here because it is a Harley and the typical Harley rider thinks a Sportster is a beginners bike or a girls bike. Even the dealers here marketed them that way. If I was going to want something that "looked" like an XR750, I would probably build it myself or have someone else do it.

If you want a real bike buy a softail. If you want a flickable Harley, buy a Buell. I would think that would be what the HD buyers would think of the XR1200 or whatever it is called. I don't think people riding other brands will seriously look at it to really buy it. I think plenty will look and think it is a cool version of a Sportster, but not step up to the plate with the $$$$.

Before you start flaming, I've probably had more Sportsters and big twins than a lot of you and I still might build an XR750 clone some day myself. It is just a great looking bike,I won't expect it to keep up with a stock SV650 either, but it will look good. 600lbs is 600lbs no matter how you dress it up.

I like this one. Not sure who it belongs to.

Maybe the target group for this bike is the sport-rider who'd like to ride HDs in a more sporting manner?

IMO, the target group is rider that want a combination of nostalgia and performance dressed up in Harley clothes. When I first saw the bike I immediately knew which of my Harley riding friends would buy it if were available here. He has owned countless big twins but currently enjoys his 883R/1200. The XR is everything he wants his current sportster to be.
