Eek Donations: UN freakin' BELIEVABLE!!!

When we laid out The Plan in 3-part harmony, it called for raising $3,000 for a new server.

I had no idea but thought $3,000 would be tough. I thought we'd have to restrict attached images to donors or whatever.

Two weeks later, I had received just over $8,000 in donations.

First, many many THANKS to everyone who contributed. The donations ranged from $5 from starving students and unemployed to $376 for someone who sold a GPS and donated the proceeds.

Second, we don't need anymore for more than a year! I don't feel right about taking donations for my own use and the combination of server and bandwidth for the next year won't cost as much as we have in savings.

Third, I'm going to order the hardware in a few days and go a little bit higher end -- $4,000 -- and hopefully that will hold us for 3 years.

Fourth, our current bill for bandwidth is about $250/month, but smugmug, who lets us host the server in their racks and use their bandwidth, is about to buy a really fat pipe (100 mbps) that will knock ADVrider's bandwidth bill down to below $100/month if it works (the pipe isn't AAA-quality bandwidth so we may not go for it; film at 11).

Fifth, I feel really bad that all these donations are pouring in and I haven't had the time to thank everyone. Believe me, I read every note and appreciate every donation -- I just have lots to do fixing the remaining bugs, doing the feature additions, and putting the server in a new location.

Sixth, we could think about adding things I never thought we could, like the ability to attach more than 1 image/post now that we have some breathing room. Or offer more grace to people who have smugmug accounts and hit their traffic limits due to popular ride reports. Your thoughts.

Man, let's rock and roll this year.

What an amazing place this has become.

Why don't you use some of the cash and take the mods to Disneyworld for the week, you've all worked hard and deserve a holiday......let the lunatics run the asylum for a few days...it'll be in good hands.....

.....oh, and thank you, very, very much

Not really is being a million atempts to make forums like this..just look at the MOA board*Boring*,the BMW message board*Even more Boring* or even the GS list(is being about 6/7 months since my last posting and ready to Unsubcribe),,not to mension the "Super sensitive" RTwhatever,,,I think king Baldy got this one just right and is becoming a "melting pot" of cultures and personality as oppose to some static and Untochable dogmatic site

I really love this place

Here's a suggestion, take all the donation monies put them in a dedicated intrest bearing account. Make that the Advrider slush fund for paying the bills, future upgrades, emergency expenses (hardware failures, litigation fees , whatever). Anything that will stop the need for paid advertisements, and keep this place going, and going, and going.

Once you get to a point where you know the slush fund is at a selfsustaining level and has extra, use the extra money for prizes! Maybe for competitions, best photos, outragous mods, most mileage for a period of time. Or maybe for backing meetings. I don't know, I'm just throwing out ideas.

This place has turned out to be the best place for me on the net. I live here, and get frustrated when things slow down.

Well, it seems Baldy didn't run off to Tijuana with the proceeds to satiate his vulgar appetites. You owe me a Coke, Porky.

8 large in a couple of weeks. This site RAWKS.

Screw taking the mods to Disney whatever. A keg for the group in Colorado would be cool though.
