Laugh W N C....is the place for me....

The call went out for a weekday ride to the wilderness area below the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway......

That call was answered.

A group of 6 riders assembled at Balsam Lake:
Driller
Gaston Gagne
Layla
mel brooks
Wildhair
myself...knybanjo

It was one of those rides we all go on now and then that the pictures just never seem to do it justice.
I've been struggling with my photographic skills, or lack thereof, here lately anyway.
to take or ...... riding won the majority of the time.

But that aint gonna stop me from posting what I took.....

The view at our 1st stop

The "gang" of hooligans assemble.

The weather could not have been better.

.....then the "carnage" began.......

With all the talk of drought in the Carolinas you'd think it would be really hard to find any mud these days........

Wildhair checking out the "funk" in the "log bog"

Mel says "this aint nothin', when it's full of water...you can't see any logs!!"

Mel making it look easy in one of my bad pics....

Driller

Oh, there's plenty more yet to come.......

Miles and miles of dual sport heaven is what I'd print on the brochures....

There's an old truck in there someplace..

YJ tells me that Mel is the one to talk to about Caney Fork......Mel keeps saying "that's why we need Vic here...."

We checked out several dead ends and one small loop.....B21 was carved into the post where this bedroom suite is located.

I'll admit....we did have to make a couple of short hops on some really bad pavement with lousy scenery...

I'll be back......But maybe some of the other riders will chime in with a few pics too.

Time to wash off the memories of the asphalt....

Wildhair splashes through as Gaston Gagne hopefully gets some better pics...

Layla splashing in with Mel now armed with a camera too.

Driller knows how it's done.

This is where Arkangel joined us....a new rider without knobbie tires.....
he's learning it the hard way for sure....

Mel being a brave soul and checking out the "cabin" to see if anyone was home.

Blazing a trail around a dead fall

Layla

Wildhair showing good form.

Arkangel learning the value of knobbie tires in the woods.....the hard way.

Gaston says "you don't need no steeenkin knobbies.."..and rides his bike out for him...this time.

Driller getting it done!

This looks like a good a place as any to stop for lunch...dontcha think?

I think we called this Big Bald

View from the top

After lunch we had some confusion as to if the rider behind had seen the turn or not....
Always make sure that the rider behind sees you!!! not just that you've seen him.

While waiting for the heard to be reunited.....we found ourselves in this tunnel of mud puddles.

Mel would soon be along to "star" in her new video..

Nicki was quick to show her some mercy and lend a hand. Me...well....

videos next.......

1st a bit of history...Mel has the pics to prove it...

Arkangel fell over in every single mud hole leading up to this one ...then She falls over in front of the video camera!

That's just the 1/2 of it!! Arkangel comes right behind them and Aces it!!

That scenario kinda reminded me of skiing down the mountain..Acing the top...then falling over in front of the lodge!!

Layla in a poor photo...bad focus, lighting..... but good riding....that makes up for it!!

Wildhair follows down the rocks.

Is that bike smoking?

Next up.....video of that rocky descent.

Here's driller...bouncing his way down the mountain.

Gaston flying down the hill so fast I almost missed him.

Mel following Arkangel, who's form is starting to look better.....

The "roads" go on like this for miles and miles in this area....
....this was just a random stop...

I'll chuck my 2 cents in....

After a brief stop at the bald meadow, we headed for the log bog.

With little rain in the area, the log bog is a little dry these days. But it does let you see what a load of crap is down there under all that water. Even more logs than you think.

I don’t know how much we rode today, probably a bit under a hundred miles, probably 90% of it dirt.

Driller

knybanjo

Kevin and the Wildhair

Layla

Driller

We stopped at a crossroads to regroup and noticed a dual sport headed our way. It happened to be Arkangel, who thought he might be able to find us out there in all that. Well, he did, and joined in for some of the ride.

First little oops...

Gaston Gagne

Lunch at Big Bald

Crazy on Red Bull

Even though there’s not been much rain, apparently this little part of the trail got some recently. Lots of mudholes. Some pretty deep, so not so bad, all pretty stinky.

Arkangel gets an “A” for effort on this section.

Driller...

We needed a gas stop, so we headed for the gas station out near Judaculla Rock. Arkangel split for home here, and the rest of us had a break.

Then, back to the trails.

“Look at this big ol’ hole in the ground....”

Another caption contest. Just what are you guys talking about?

Wildhair and Gaston Gagne

Wildhair washes his bike.

I'm going to claim that I wanted to blur the riders for special effect...yeah, that's it...it's a special effect!

Look! it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a BRP!!

Joe, is that you?

Team Green

driller throwing up that bow wave.

Eventually you've got to stop for fuel.....does your dual sport run on moonshine?

(Gaston stopped to take pics of a rattle snake in the road just before we got here...stay tuned for his side of the story)

My kind of place!!

Little did we know....that the shelter in the back right of this pic would keep us dry during a little cooling shower later on.

Somebody must have been thinking.. ..ya know, you just can't have enough log bogs....

Mel walking the "tight rope" around it.

That's Wildhair....and that's all I remember about that pic...

Oh yeah.....there was an optional hill climb in the middle of the Ruff Butt area...
a couple of videos next.....so stay tuned..
