On the APC I reckon I used about a litre of oil, I didn't do an oil change during the rally and spent a long time at about 130kph. I did find engine oil in the airbox and throttle body inlet as well as there was a minor oil streak down from the exhaust. no loss of power or smoke though. I dropped the bike once in the simpson and once about 20km from the end, could it just be oil from the breather getting into the airbox during a fall or something more suspicious.
I guess all I can do is get a compression check done. I think on the 990 they put a check valve in the breather line to the airbox maybe for the rollover scenario.
Need to run it a bit now I am back to see if it is still using oil.
Any suggestions.
Andy

check valve on the breather also lowers crank case pressure.

A few more details Andy please...
What oil were you running and how many k's on the oil?
Your motor wasn't running too rich was it due to dirty filter?
I reckon once oils shear down, they mysteriously disappear...usually through the crankcase breather.
Also check the end of your exhaust...it should leave a very slight soot on your finger and shouldn't be oily.

(ps the DR used to sit on 140 for long periods so I don't think 130 is going to hurt the 690)

Running the correct motorex 10/60 and changed just before the rally, oil change interval is 7500km and the rally was about that. No Rev counter on the 690 hence my speed quote running standard gearing.
I was running filter socks so could have been rich but I did change them regularly, there was a dribble mark from the exhaust but it didn't look sooty.

my dr does the same thing when sitting on 130-140 for a long time (3-5hrs) i wouldnt worry about it ,its just a bit of blow by from the constant pressure build up in the guts of it.

The best thing to do would've been to send a sample of your oil for analysis. I suspect that it was well and truly fucked.
Just see how it goes with the new oil and if it starts easy and runs well with no abnormal noises, then it's probably fine
