Awesome

Great stuff! Thank you very much for sharing it with us. Glad you and your son could spend the time together.

Ride Safe.

Wednesday Report

So here's the view of Chimney Rock from the tent at sunrise Wed AM:

We tried climbing up South CO 860 some more. We didnt get too far.

So we turned around, packed up and headed down the Cimarron River, past Silver Jack Reservoir, back on CO 50, and at Sapinero, we turned south on a gravel road toward CO 149 and Lake City.

This is near Silver Jack Res.

Here we are after Sapinero

where we learned about "blading", when

tractors turn great hard packed dirt into smooth-thick-fresh gravel. A nightmare...

Back to Lake City for showers at the Silver Spur hotel and lemoncellos at the local italian restaurant.

Do you want to plan a return trip in September and actually ride all the passes?

Keep it coming!

Chimney Rock

Any chance you'd be willing to share your gps route from 550 to chimney rock and back to Lake City? I'll be camping at Eureka the 1st week of August and am not familiar with the Chimney rock area. It looks like a place I need to go see.

Thanks,
Joel

Thursday Report

So after a good night sleep in Lake City, we had an early lunch at The Tic Toc Diner and headed for our last 24 hours of ADV

The plan was to ride toward Cinnamon pass, explore Wager Gulch and Carson Ghost City, and figure out which 14 thousander to climb. Once again, we chickenned out when Wager Gulch got too steep and with lots of loose rock for our skill level.

Here's the picture that alert ADV reader WindRiver took and posted a couple of days ago on our way down Wager:

I didn't feel too bad when an MX rider coming down who looked like he knew what he was doing told us that road on a 650 made him turn around last year...

These are on the main drag toward Cinnamon:

And this one is on a side road toward American Basin right before a creek crossing blocked by snow...

We decided to look for a potential place to camp and explore the trail to Handies Peak, one of the several 14 thousanders in the area.

Here's Alex showing off:

On our way, lot's of snow, so we lost the trail several times. This picture has our campsite way down in the background near the patch of snow on the pine trees and Cinnamon Pass on the distance...

Partially frozen Sloan Lake:

On the way to the saddle (top left) between Handies and other unamed mountain tops...As usual, picture does no justice to how steep that crossing felt on tennis shoes...

On top of Handies the 360 degree view was spectacular...14,034, barely 14,000 but I guess it counts...

Start of the climb down with Sloan Lake in the distance:

Sun setting...we got to the camp site around 10 PM, tired after the 6 hour hike, ready for hot soup and a cold beer. Last night camping in Colorado? very

Friday Report

Friday report.

A room with a view:

Packing up the 650's. One last look at American Basin before turning around and heading back home...

The rig after the long trek back to Baton Rouge. The rain cleaned the 650's a bit...
