Dirtroad riding on the Isle of Crete, GR

Have been on a what supposed to be sissy motorcycle trip around the western part of Crete lately. Mainly set’ up to hang out for a week with a bunch friends, cruising some bars and restaurants for local food and brewery and do some bikerides between the eating and drinking parts once in a while.
Soon enough (actually right after the very first day of riding) everything changed and the whole thing finally turned out to be one real bad-ass hardcore offroad motorcycle trip which for sure for long time will be the very best that I’ve experienced in all my motorcycle-life so far.

Not much to tell about, but lots of pics to show. Anyway not too many pics about riding, as obviously I kept myself very much busy with staying on the bike wile riding instead of taking fancy photography.

The south-western part of the Isle of Crete is rough and has a very low tourist pollution, as there are simply too less beaches for the average tourists-taste. Little villages which have absolutely nothing from any interest to offer beside the local pub which often enough is one of the inhabitant’s leaving room or backyard.

This is Willy. Founder, owner, guide, secretary and also mechanic of www.letsbike.ch The guy knows each and every corner in that part of the island! You thought riding in a cue behind an old fart and over one treeless Island is a boring thing?? Go check out a trip with Willy! You will change your mind!

Greek salad! Only the oil they use I could drink from the bottle…..! Yumm…!

Don’t ask me for names, places or directions ….. I can’t tell you. Just couldn’t care about things like that as I just had too much to do following the band and check the landscape only once in a while.

It’s a quiet cool place. They have very remote villages….

…above remote shores

To get there sometimes take all your energy. The exertions often enough are too much:

Actually we came to ride offroad. Anyway I’m pretty happy having been shown also some of the nice black-strips.

They ARE nice, aren’t they?

But of course there was also some clichés to cover:

But most important, as the one who's reading concentrated might have found out earlier in this thread, most important is finding some space for covering the body’s demands for food and drinks:

The landscape is quiet impressive, even though there’s almost no tree to find on the whole island. The mountains go from 0 to 6000 in shortest distance and this is one really impressive thing to observe from above and from below.

The terrain can be rough and unreal….

….but also smooth and lovely

The band was pretty much worn out, but anyway in fair condition. We really didn’t spoil the racks too and I’m quiet sure our pre-renters didn’t either.

Anyway, once in a while there was some repairs required. This of course had nothing to do with bad maintenance but much more with probably a bit too hard testing the limits of tires.

Some was working harder…

…others less hard, spent the time by telling each other how fast they’ve been:

Some more food-…..

….and drink-pics:

How ever: Riding a motorcycle around the place makes very very happy

Some people just don’t feel any pressure to study the map:

Did I mention already; They have plenty of landscape…

…any style!

How ever: It is very important to make breaks in a steady interval. The way you do that depends fully on your preferences. Either you do it like this…

…or like this…

…or, if you like, also maybe like this:

GREAT! Great views from your photos. The one looking at the beach past the front tire was cool.

I've always wanted to go back to Crete and Rhodes and Santorini and ride a bike. Pictures like this remind me why

Yes, very nice place indeed. And I did not yet even mention the music, the people, the fresh smell of flowers and herbs in the air, the cristal clear water, the beautifull women/men....

There’s too much to see the very next day and it’d be a petty...

...not to get up early and watch the Island from the vessel that brings you to even more remote places.

How ever: I really was surprised how much of a “psycho-hygiene” a trip like that can be! I highly recommend it to anybody. Come, do it! And do it with passion!

And you know you did it right when you’re tired but happy when getting back to business as usual:

Awesome!

I've been to Crete and it was incredible. In fact Greece is one of my favorite countries in the world. Everybody is pleasant and the food is fantastic.

Thanks for sharing.
