Colorado weekend?

My trip to the BMW rally didn't happen this weekend, so alternate plans where made...

First, a quick Saturday morning oil change on the 950...

...then up to Boulder to meet some riding bud's. We headed out for what we originally though would be a short & mellow dual-sport ride but ended up just a bit more than that...

We wandered around Colorado's foothills for 120 miles or so with a bit of everything. Curvy canyons, deep stream crossings, mud holes, tight single track, babyheads, loose scree climbs, and some nice and mellow fire roads...

SPOT Tracks...

My SPOT messenger captured some of the waypoints, but really doesn't work well in a pack. It likes to be horizontal. Some guys mount it on their bike for better coverage, but for me it's primarily a 911 tool and I want it on me, not on my bike. I love it, but wish it would reliably track more waypoints IN my pack, or possibly with a secure mounting ON my pack.

For those who know the area, our route was Fourmile, Switzerland Trail, Rainbow Lakes, Caribou, West Magnolia, Tree Tunnel, Rollinsville, Mammoth Gulch, Mt. Kingston, Alice, St, Mary's, Central City, & Peak-to-Peak home.

Not too many picture stops, just a few iPhone shots...

CactusDave (visiting from Atlanta) & Bonezjones atop Kingston Peak...

Note to self: If you are going to run nearly bald TKC's, drop the tire pressure from from road 34 psi BEFORE attacking steep loose scree fields...

Day two. Off to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb!

Day Two: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Day Two: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

I've lived in Colorado almost two and a half decades, and never made it to the Pikes Peak hill climb. Mostly because it always used to be on the 4th of July weekend when I had other plans, and secondly because you need to get up at 0-dawn-thirty to get there before they close the road to spectator traffic.

Lots of fun watching racing on a stunning day at 13,000 ft.

Some race shots. Cars first!

A bit of the high altitude paved section

Scandanavian Flick Setup. Note that he is setting up for a drivers-LEFT turn

Another flick manuveur.

His flick didn't quite go as planned...

Looks like fun!

On to the bikes...

Men & Monkeys

What's more American than racing a motorcycle up a mountain?

Nice race track!

Bikes start 5 at a time, so even after 11 miles of switchbacks, these guys are still fighting for position

After the race, all the competitors head down in a parade lap. Sorry, these photo's are pretty weak iPhone photo's again...

While we where waiting, this guy was hanging around checking a DNF BSA. Said he had raced the PPIHC a few years back... Huh. Wonder who he is :-) Sorry for the absolutely CRAPPY photo...

These guys where surprisingly fast!

The drop the suspension on the Baja race trucks just a bit before the PPIHC

Orange bikes!

Hypermotard

Big-ass BMW

Current record holder from 2007. 10.01

awesome! I was day dreaming about doing the PPIHC while driving up PP last November. Too bad (maybe not) my Xterra was pretty well bogged down going up once we hit about 8.000 ft!

Where do the race cars actually start the race?
