Question BMW F650GS / F800GS what's on-board computer add?

Maybe one of you UKers can help me?

Being stuck here in the USA I'm suffering from FxxxGS twin shortage....

I am #1 on the list at my local dealer for F650GS twin.

My question:

What display functions does the on-board computer add to the "standard" functions?

Can the OBC be upgraded by dealer or owner?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim, hang in there, you're almost there.

The OBC adds some handy doodads:
- Front and rear tire pressure monitoring
- Outside temperature
- Avg speed
- Fuel consumption stats (avg, range)
- Stopwatch / lap timer

Since mine shipped with a faulty fuel level sensor I've only been making use of the pressure monitoring, but since that was the main reason I got it, I don't mind.

IIRC PuraVida, the tire pressure monitor only works on the 650 with its tubeless tires, not on the 800. Isn't that right?

Do you have any idea where the outside temp sensor is located?

Thanks! I am having trouble being patient ... like a kid waiting for Xmas....

The bike coming does NOT have the computer and I think I'll be OK with that ... since it appears the standard features include the things I'm most interested in:

Coolant temp
fuel level
and ... until I get used to the new bike ... what gear I'm in

Jim

JR: I asked these questions sometime back and CRAP I can't find ALL the answers you want but I can answer SOME:
1. OBC is 100% NOT upgradeable by the dealer
2. To get tire pressure monitor function (F650 ONLY) you must buy option 530 ($250) and 539 ($295) OBC
3. I believe there are two tripmeters, coolant temp and ambient temp, average MPG, instantaneous MPS in OBC. I think there are others...but I forget
4. Prices are right off the US BMW motorcycle website. Dealers here say we are about 2 weeks from having them on the floor
5. I am scheduled to road test one in Fairport NY @ Country Rode BMW 16 Aug 08. There is a roaming truck full of bikes going to dealers and bike events...the locations are on the website also

Thanks Ed...
Dang ... don't take offense but I hope you are wrong on the coolant temp... that is the ONE thing I would really like to keep an eye on ....

I'll hit the website for the "roving pack of bikes" schedule....

Dealer is showing the status of mine is: "produced but not shipped" so I guess that's means several weeks at least transit time from Germany to port of entry to dealer?

Computer also shows cruising range until empty. There's also a laptimer/stopwatch facility as found on the F800S/ST.

Stopped by the dealer today to get some oil, filters, etc.

He showed me in the system where my F800GS is "in transit". Bike was "produced" on July 1.

This is very likely true, but we don't have the 800 here yet, so I can't say for sure.

In the F800gs this is not available.

In what respects the functionalities of the OBC, you can check the following with a simple movement of your left’s hand thumb:
- outside temp
- average speed since last time you reset the thing
- average fuel consumption since last time you reset the thing
- Instantaneous fuel consumption
- the kms you can do before the gas tank will be empty

Apart from that, with two buttons located in the OBC itself, you can control:
- a digital watch
- the absolute total number of kilometre
- two partial odometers that you can reset at your convenience
- lap timer.

Greetings from a F800gs with +3000kms of entertainment. Be patient, the bike is worth to wait.

Under the faux tank cover, right about where the front edge upturn of the seat is.

On the F650GS, I think the temperature sensor is up front under the bottom right corner of the big headlight. There is a little black finger there, exposed to incoming air, with no other obvious purpose.

Hm, you'd think the temperature would be affected by the engine heat there. Have you had a chance to check its accuracy, Blackie? Or is it like those bank building thermometer displays you see all over the place, accurate to within +/- 20°F?

Geez, I've been waiting on this bike for so long, I'm starting to fixate on just about anything.
