I sent the sales guy your pics, thanks again, but have not heard back yet.
The more I look at it, the more cheezy I think the little filler plate looks....

Since it is covering the part of the display that shows fuel level / gear shift / temp. I gotta think that those things ain't in the non-OBC version.... but I wonder what happens if you pop off the little cover?

Is part of the cost of the OBC the temp. sensor / gear lever position sensor and etc?

Now I'm just getting cranky.....

I don't remember where I read this now, so this info may be entirely bogus, but it seems that the non-OBC screen is a completely separate assembly with a different wiring harness, connectors, etc., not just a bezel with a smaller opening. But until one of us actually gets our hands on a non-OBC bike and determines what exactly is included on that display, it's all speculation.

Unlike 99% of the rest of the info here.

Thanks David... right after lunch my son says I need to go by a "chill pill" ... if the drug store has some, I'm on it

Microfiche isn't much help either ...
It lists a US "high" and "low" I wonder what the CD is for???

http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fic...p?mospid=50779

I hate to pass up F650GS #1 at my dealer, but I think I may have to stand by and get one with the computer ....
I wonder how much longer THAT makes the wait...
Now.................... where are those freak'n chill pills????

gonna try to "conclude" this thread again.......

Ok...
I went by my local dealer today and the salesman concludes from looking at the new 800ST that indeed without the OBC you only get the "top half" of the display - as shown in the pictures earlier on in this thread....

That means without OBC you get no fuel gauge and no temp gauge... things I'd really like to have for "only" $295 extra ....

So....... I have given up my ownership of position #1 at my dealer and fallen back to #2 which is not yet in production and can have it's configuration updated, so I have selected the exact options I wanted... and for "only" $250 decided to get the TPM as well ................

And now I get to wait longer as bike #2 is still pending ... which is of course why I could alter the config.....

Sigh...................

My condolences. But welcome to my world.

I think you're doing the right thing, though. I know that I'd be pissed at myself every time I looked down at that half-assed, half display.

Yeah........... I'm with you ... if the "half display" didn't look so "detuned" I might go for it ... but I really do want to be able to watch engine temp with more precision than an idiot light, and I did pick up other options that I was on the fence about so ...... on I wait..........................

Ditto! I consult the OBC on my 650 twin all the time, especially atmo temp and yes, gear position. For style reasons, the OBC unit gives the instrument cluster a little design balance, i.e., makes it a bit more attractive -- as well as being functional! I think the bar graph for engine temp is actually pretty helpful, especially on the warmup.

So, I'd been riding at around 120 kph for a couple of hours through Germany this morning when the gear indicator suddenly starts flashing "6.4.6.....4...6.4.6.4.6.4....6...4" and stayed there. Still cruising in sixth but the gear indicator says fourth. Pulled in the clutch and it went blank. Changed down and it said fifth, changed back up and it read sixth. Five minutes later it did the exact same thing. I stopped, refuelled and it read perfectly all afternoon. WTF?

It's just had it's 12k service. Any thoughts?

I have the F800GS owner's manual as an Adobe Reader pdf file. If someone needs it let me know via private message with your e-mail so we don't clog up the forum. 2.3 Mb

Or you can download it here:

Bringing up an old thread. I know what the OBC has but what does the non OBC have? Also can one be added?

Yam:
flip back thru the thread for more details, but basiclly you don't get the bottom "half" of the display which is where fuel level, gear selected, and temp. are displays along with the selectable "computer" line that shows all the computer generated values (e.g. distance to empty, ...) + ambient temp.

I sprung for it for two reasons...
I think it looks stupid without it ... due to the dummy black plastic bezel covering up the bottom part of what would be the display if you did have the OBC ... also ... I like the temp. gauge -- instead of just the idiot light.

I do NOT think it can be added later (at least not at a price anyone would want to pay...)

This is a great thread guys, I am about ready to buy an F800GS and wondered what the difference was on the on-board computer. You answered all my questions, thanks.

I believe that the distance to empty function of the computer is no more on the 2011 models and that any older model that gets a software update will lose that function.
