F650 Gs

I had a chance to ride the new F650 GS today while the BMW demo fleet was in town, 'nice bike. Unfortunately, it had the lowered suspension w/ lower seat which was a bit much given my height (6' 2") but I was impressed by how smooth and powerful it was. 'Not sure what they do to the tuning on the 800 version but the 650 was plenty fast, faster if memory serves than the DL650 I use to have. I also sort of like the less Rambo oriented styling. Really, I rode it do get a feel for the parallel twin engine in the new frame but having done so, I think I may actually like the 650 variant as well or better. 'Certainly it added it to the consideration set vs. the "what we're they thinking" attitude I had towards it before. 'Impressive bike for the money.

It is a nice engine, I rode a F800s, not the gs, the other day. Had plenty of power although im used to my klr250. I got to sit on a F800gs back in may when the demo truck came through South east michigan. For some reason the F650gs and F800gs couldn't be taken for demo rides at that time.

I wasn't too wild about it. It felt lighter than the DL tho which didn't make it seem like a larger bike. It specs at 377/dry and carries 4.2 gallons which likely means wet it's about the same as a KLR but with a lot more power. If these thing ever actually get over here they should be interesting.

They seem like they're selling pretty well here in Japan, where the 800gs isn't yet available. Saw three last weekend while out touring.

I wonder if you can put 17/21 wheels from the 800 onto the 650, that way you can have a wide selection of dirt tires.

The tubeless tire trade-off

Being able to plug a flat tire while it is still on the bike makes more sense on a bike aimed at a 90/10 (if that) real world ratio of miles ridden on paved vs. unpaved roads.

The onboard computer with tyre pressuer monitoring is handy too. My wife got a puncture on her F650GS first ride out, with only ~100km on the clock. What someone was doing leaving a self tapper on a dirt road is anyone's guess, but she was alerted on the dash when the tyre pressure dropped and I finished the job and just screwed the bastard screw completely in to plug the leak it had caused. Unloaded one compressed air cartridge in it to get it back up to approx full pressure. It only lost 0.1 bar pressure on the 25km ride to the bike shop... whatever that is. Pity the dash isn't configurable.. Is it just the Germans who uses 'bar' to measure tyre pressures ?

yup, I noticed that too. They had one with and one without the on-board computer and I much preferred the the read out w/ tire pressure upgrade.
'No doubt they will charge a fortune for that but when you've only got two wheels, it's nice to have a little advance warning if one of them is going flat,
particularly on a tubeless tire you stand a chance of plugging.

$10,430 before tax, tag, dealer fees

A couple of F650GSs are listed on a NC dealer's website for $10,430 with a note that they are due in mid-August. Both have a long list of options and don't forget to add $495 for freight. Any chance that BMW will send over any sub-$10K F-650GSs, or is plunking down a deposit and ordering one the only way to stay below 10 grand?

Probably. Mine will be $9,060 + tax and registration. It should be here within the next two weeks, unless something has changed that I don't know about.

Check with your dealer if that can be changed. North American bikes have PSI for pressure readouts.

There's nothing in the manual about configuring the display, so I'm thinking that there'll be two different software versions.. a kph, bar and km display for metric countries and mph, psi & miles for non-metric countries. If that was the case I doubt there'd be any mixing and matching. Unfortunately, because Australia used official imperial measurements until the 60s & 70s then switched to metric, while we use metric for most things, it's still common to measure things like tyre pressure here in PSI and a person's height in feet and inches.

I ordered my F650GS twin with the computer, but without the tire pressure monitor. I ordered no cases, either, because I plan to keep my Roadster for the long hauls. But who knows how my bike preferences will pan out in the end?

No promised delivery date, but that's okay. My color selection was silver or blue or if it had to be, then red, whatever comes down the pipeline :)

It'll be nice to have a lighter Beemer dual-sport, and the shop is only five miles from me.
