The Face Plant forum is important.

I used to be, and still am on occassion, a hooligan. My first click into this face plant thread was to see some crash photos, just being honest. Then a couple months ago a good friend of mine had a fairly serious crash. He, like me, has a wife and kids, a job and all the other regular responsibilities of a dude in his thirties. That accident made keeping those responsibilies difficult. It was an accident that could happen to me, easily and on any day. (He is recovered now)

This thread, if nothing else, is a reality check. A sobering collection of reality that I believe can keep more of us safe and alive. It reminds me that I need to be more alert. I need to slow down. I need to leave more space. I need to look further ahead. I need to remember that other drivers don't care about me, at least not as much as they care about getting to work/home/homedepot or the next set of lights. When I am riding, I need to keep in mind, all the important things in my life that are waiting for my return.

BTW - I just bought and am reading a book called Proficient Motorcycling. I read about it on ADVrider a couple days ago. It's good, I recommend it.

Not sure why I wrote this. The story of the 16 year old dirtbiker struck me.

I know I can't possibly live long enough to make all the mistakes you FF's make so I tune in here to learn. It's cheaper than making the same mistake myself.

I posted that story about the 16 yr old. My wife went to his funeral this past Monday - - - so many great things said about him; she said there were at least 300 people there.

He would be glad that his story inspired you to think - - - so much so that you felt you needed to post about the importance of this forum.

I think everyone that read your post agrees with you - - - - reality checks are a good thing.

The community and mods here should be commended on continuing to keep this forum relevant and helpful to both those who have not experienced a motorcycle mishap and those that have; it's not an easy feat to achieve.

I read Face Plant weekly and appreciate others sharing their stories. It's a reality check and helps me keep a fresh perspective on my riding style, especially now that I ride two up most of the time with someone very precious on pillion.
BTW: I'm reading "Total Control" by Lee Parks and even after 40 plus years of riding this funny and informative book it taking me back to school.

all good points, I am really glad Face Plant is a part of ADV because if nothing else it really helps raise awareness.
in everyday life, you may hear about an accident, and you think oh, that sucks. then you move on. here, you get the in depth personal account of not only the accident, but the aftermath, which may take months or years to recover from physically, mentally, and financially.
My first post ever was in Face Plant, a very long scary and well written saga of a fellow riding abroad, and it has affected me ever since.

Face plant forum is a very important thread, and I visit this thread once a week. It keeps me aware of the danger we all face as motorcycle riders, and we share experiences of what type of gear works and fail us while involved in an accident.
