I took this pic after wiring the lights so it doesn't show the full screen. It is raining heavily outside so I cant get another one taken at the moment.
The screen definately stops some of the wind at high speed(110kph)

i used to own a xr400. the rear fender and light look exactly the same.
here's a sweet liscense plate bracket.
one them them has to work or be close.

http://www.fourstrokesonly.com/LicensePlateHolder2.html

scott makes them;
http://scottsonline.com/products.php...=5&Bike=Yamaha

only mod i did was use larger fender washers on the front and back of the plate at the upper bolt holes. the bracket has a small surface area and the vibration causes the plate to crack apart and fail. i also sandwhiched the same size rubber washer right against the front and back of the plate and then the washer front and back and then bolted to the frame. i figured the rubber might dampen some of the vibs. after that the new plate lasted for years until i sold it.

I am thinking about a drz myself to compliment the 650.
Few questions for the experts

-01 to 07 in the USA correct?

-what are the differences among the years?

-looks like the 01 has the old style headlight and then 02 - 07 the new style?

-06 & 07 bikes get the less desirable CV carb vrs the 01-05 w/ pumper, yes?

-any other mechanical differences? in the engine? all years have the piston coating material? any problems with head gaskets leaking like the 03 and older dr650 had? any problems with swingarm bolt seizing in place (can't remove to lube the swingarm bearings) like the XR400s had?

so 02-05 are the best years???

besides the normal wear items, anything to look out for when looking?

thanks!

you can also find a dr650 and add this shield for great protection
http://www.madstad.com/s.nl/it.A/id.553/.f

...something tells me this also has a strong chance of fitting the drz too

As for the F650 take a look at the Suzuki XF650 (predecessor to the V-Strom), similiar looks to the BMW but with Suzuki reliability

I have a DR650 and also a DRZ250. The main reason for the DRZ was because the 650 was just too heavy in the technical stuff. I was able to handle the 650 well until I drop it. Picking it up a few times was a PITA and drains me out .

There are very few used DRZ250s available comparatively for sale, at least in my area. I got a 2001... mainly because that was the only one that was available that was already street titled. I wanted something lighter for the 'Hero' sections that I could pickup with less swearing and have been happy so far.

Having owned a DR I know that these are low maintenance a reliable. I have the pumper carb. Not used my DRZ as much as I had wanted it to this year but have been happy so far with my purchase.

Others may chime in with more specific answers. Overall a great addition to the DR if you are looking for a little brother for the dirty stuff.

I had a few other alternatives to the DRZ, but the simplicity/reliability factor won at the end.
