12 or 13/49 works better for the ugly stuff

15/49 is the best all around so far here in the wv

any out there got pix of there drz250 with a larger fuel tank on it?

i am looking into a dr650 tank as well as other options

i did some digging on the net today and found that there is a mid 90s up dr250r

this is like a djebel but with a smaller headlight
so lets welcome any one with or who has had a dr250r to share stories of their times with that model
and maybe a smaller gas tank

Just read all 8 pages and thanks for the motivation. I have a DRZ 250 that I've been sitting on with electrical problems. Pretty sure it needs a CDI unit. I've tested everything else and it all tests within the parameters the service manual spells out.

I hate to spend the money, ($400+) without knowing for sure that it's bad, so would anyone be willing to try mine out on their bike?

I'll pay shipping both ways.

Or if you know of a better place to get one or a parts bike..... well I'd love to know that too. I've checked all the usual parts suppliers, bikebandit, service honda, cheapcycleparts, etc.

Thanks

an update
i put a 15/46 sproket combo on my bike with the ds tyres
i will confess i went crazy and put a 450 rear tyre on the machine its ok
any how i hit the interstate the other day and with unbalanced wheels i rolled it up 66.7 mph with more left and cruised at 60 mph
i could have hit 80 mph if not for the lack of balance on the wheels

i did ride it on some fire roads with the 15/49 combo with the right size tyre for light duty this is not a bad way to go for all around use

find out if this CDI crosses over with a DR250?? if it does, comb junk yards.
also some people have fixed CDI's on transalps, they peeled them open, re soldered a broken IC. dunno maybe it might work on yours. ? thats a lot of $$ or a CDI more then a transalp

I think it'd more likely cross over with a DRZ400. I'll check though and thanks for that.

I cut one of my CDIs open with a dremel. good luck getting all the goop off of it to be able to even see anything resembling an electronic component. Tried multiple ways to get it off with no joy. I keep reading about folks who open them up and are able to see and fix things, but one of these is full of a black hard rubberish RTV like substance. Agreed it is a lot of money. That's why I'm trying to be certain before shelling out the cash. Otherwise my only other option is to part it out....

once your cdi gets here we will know more about the problem
lets keep a good thought
have you checked the wires to and from the kill switch and the key?

multiple times. Stator is generating AC to the CDI, the trigger coil is triggering, I just have no spark. The coil ohms out within spec both on the primary and secondary side.

The reason I think the CDI is shot is because it 'bleeds' DC voltage continusouly to the coil. How can the capacitor in the CDI unit store enough voltage to fire the coil when it is in a continuous state of discharge?

No matter where the flywheel is at in its rotation there is DC voltage at the coil input. Seems to me the capacitor has to 'charge' during 270+ degrees of rotation storing up voltage to discharge when the trigger coil tells the CDI to fire.

Just my .02

I meant for the CDI to go in the mail today but it didn't happen. It'll go in the mail tomorrow however.
Thanks

so the bad news is there is a problem else where
a short in a wire some where
a bad plug spark or other wise
a bad kill switch or key switch
if it is ok i am riding my bike to work tuesday
so if i might use your cdi box for the day as a test

Fine by me. Use it for a couple days if you want.

I have had the kill switch completely disconnected to alleviate that as a problem. I'll have to start from scratch and go through everything piece by piece to figure this out again. Everything seems to be working with continuity where there should be. Now I'm wondering about the stator.

I got this bike for cheeeeap cause the PO tried to jump it off with a running truck and fried the system.

I had to completely replace the wiring harness, rectifier, and the trigger coil as the old one wasn't doing anything.

Thanks for your help and send it back when you get the chance. I appreciate your help.
