Question Sept. 14 Ride, anybody??

Is there anybody in central Iowa that is planning on the MITRA ride? If so, I am in Ames and would like to meet up with whomever and participate in the ride.

I would like to go but I don't want to ride the Husky all the way there, ride 100+ miles and then ride it back. Just isn't good for the there and back part.

Sounds like fun I am in, if I am not in the field.

A friend and I rode the Great River rode up to Dubuque yesterday and came up on a 2 bike crash. Truck turned left right into them head on.
One biker died
Kind of takes the wind out of a good day of riding.

I was on Hwy 52 just south of Dbq yesterday for a short stretch on my bicycle. It's a bad road for accidents. Lots of weekend out of town sightseers on a winding two lane road. Makes me nervous every time I have to ride a little stretch of it.

Enginewife and I are planning on doing the MITRA ride. It'll be her first group ride so we'll see if the mighty TW can keep up

Iowa mapping solution

I ran across something interesting dealing with mapping of Iowa backroads today, so I thought I'd pass it along.

I got the notion to ask a guy at DOT if it was possible to get a geo-located copy of the color county maps so that we could automatically load B Road locations and gravel road routes without having to manually map them. The guy said that it’s really easy.

You download PDF Maps by Avenza to a phone or tablet.

Then, download color county maps from DOT for the counties you are interested in: http://www.iowadot.gov/maps/msp/pdfview/counties.html

Load the county maps into a Dropbox and then pull the maps over to the PDF Maps application. That’s it. You select the map for the county you are in, and your location shows up on the PDF. B Roads are in green. :)

Here's what the application looks like in use on my iPhone 5S (during a morning walk):

Did it! Very nice. I'm going to look for other states as well. There are no level B roads in Hardin county.
