Bluhduh Red fuel bottle by Outbound.ca -- stay away

I have two red aluminum 1-liter aluminum fuel bottles built by Outbound.ca . I use (used) them to carry spare gasoline on long-haul trips. They're quite similar to MSR bottles.

I strongly recommend against this brand, for this purpose. Despite being marked as suitable for all liquid fuels, the plastic caps and seals deform and leak in the presence of gasoline. One of the bottles tipped over in transit just enough to nicely soak the clothing in the case with gasoline. No permanent damage done, but just a warning. IMHO, a sealed fuel bottle should never leak regardless of its orientation.

Stick with MSR, they're reliable, well-known and durable.

Chris

Do the MSR bottles ever leak if orientated sideways all the time?

The same with the Timber Creek brand sold at Academy stores in Texas. The seals swell and you have leaking fuel everywhere.

Ever? I suppose the O-ring could degrade such that fuel would leak. I replace the fuel in my bottles about every 2 months and look at the O-rings then. If in doubt I'd replace them. Haven't had to replace one, yet.

On that note, I plan on visiting REI at some point to see if the replacement MSR caps would fit my Outbound bottles. If the cap and O-ring make a proper fit it will be cheaper than buying all-new bottles.

If not, no big deal. It's worth a look.

Just to let every one know : I once left a full MSR bottle in a black plastic top case on a very hot sunny day. It got so hot inside the case that the O-ring warped and gas leaked out over everything. , So dont leave them inside a case while parked , it could be bad.

Don't knock it til you tried it. 1500 mile IBA ride no leaks. If left in the sun the plastic expands.

It was tested by some bikers from 10' high drop, no failure.

I think it has a larger mouth than the metal bottles for an easier fill.

If you're deep in the rough camping, put the liter in your tank and use it as a pee bottle to keep away from those critters at nite.

just my .02

BTW I use to use one of the square red 1 gal containers. Until it leaked into my civilian clothes, when I had to isolate myself at an outdoor restaurant in Palm Springs because of Eau De Exxon.
